it didn't save the book 😬 the last 20% was very anticlimactic and some twists just ruined the book for me. Anyway still entertaining but felt like there's a truly great version of this story in there that the author just couldn't get out.As breathtaking story is revealed within story, readers peel back the layers to find revenge, a meditation on the damage done by the past, and characters who could walk into the room and sit on your sofa. What details from Erin and Roxy’s stories about their childhoods and more recent events shocked you the most?

Even Jewell herself has said her thrillers follow a general trend: now and then timelines, unlikable characters, at LEAST one teenage POV.You know bad shit has happened from the start, maybe reeeaaaaalllly bad shit, but I didn't have a clue what, exactly, had gone down, and I was desperate to find out. Alix's inability to read the situation, her apparent blindness to several red flags in Josie’s behavior and her insensitivity to some extremely disturbing aspects of Josie’s life was off-putting.

The plot twists, turns and barrels it’s way at a fast pace to a good ending which isn’t neatly sewn up but which feels real as, let’s face it, life frequently isn’t tied up in a pretty bow. Nathan sits heavily next to her and rolls his Scotch around a solitary ice cube, one of the huge cylindrical ones he makes from mineral water.

While the writing does an excellent job at slowly building an atmosphere of foreboding as Josie’s presence grows more insidious, when we learn in the novel that her story wasn’t the truth it’s expected not a surprise twist.
