The Book of Dahlia reads like an episode of "This is Your Life", separated into chapters defined by the commandments of a self-help cancer booklet meant to assist the dying on their "incredible journey". James Ellroy's own mother was raped and murdered a decade or so after Betty Short, when Ellroy was still a young boy. I believe there is a much simpler answer to the puzzle of the Black Dahlia than the one offered here.

Now, obsessed myself, having also just seen the Brian de Palma film version, I have to read Ellroy’s My Dark Places. A naked woman dies and is found in a vacant lot, we have to ask questions for seventy years about her sex life, of course. They are very different, yet almost helplessly attracted to each other like the north and south poles of magnets. Years ago, it was Erin’s stunning creativity and beautiful arrangements that drew me in and made me want to take note of anything and everything she was up to.

During the pageant to celebrate the removal of the last four letters of the "Hollywoodland" sign, a nearby shack is discovered to contain a mattress covered in dried blood. The fight is promoted as "Fire versus Ice", reflecting their contrasting boxing styles and personalities. It started off promising--funny and irreverent and quirky--but not that far into it, the novelty of it began to wear off for me.

Everyman's Library has just published a new hardback volume containing all four of the novels that comprise James Ellroy's first L. After retiring from a 30-year career as an educator, he owned and operated, together with his wife, Alpen Gardens, a commercial dahlia nursery, for 20 years. Because we are talking here about death, and f*ck you if you don't like it: You're going to die, too. Like Blanchard, Ellroy was driven to actual madness, completely out of control, maybe even like Blanchard near death, obsessed with his mother’s case, which he fictionally conflates in many ways with Bettie Short’s story.It makes the reader struggle with Dahlia and their own ethics surrounding happiness, love and death.

Warning, Adults only: There are many horrific and violent scenes here, and a truly macabre and depraved solution to the mystery.

It’s strangely beautiful that, in the end, she uses what remaining forgiveness she has for herself—her strength is not in forgiving the failings of others, but forgiving herself for how she let them wear her down.
