I first tasted Boddies in 1974 in Carnforth which was as far away from Manchester as you could get it at that time. The big decline seems to have happened at some time between 1980 and 1984, which significantly is before they acquired Higsons, let alone were bought out by Whitbread. The most famous television advertisement featured a glamorous couple on-board gondolas on Manchester's River Irwell, in a parody of a well-known "just one Cornetto" ice cream advertisement. Seems like they're doing better now from a commercial point of view but it's impossible to distinguish their beers from those of other breweries. To mark the occasion, a special Boddingtons 5% ABV Commonwealth Ale cask ale was produced for the North West of England, and subsequently launched nationwide. Didn’t come across it again until 84, and my recollection was that it was much the same at that point – I have scribbled “still ok” against it in the GBG for that year.

The Observer commented in 1974 that Boddingtons cheap pricing and distinctive flavour afforded it an unusually loyal following. v=1596112823","width":800}],"requires_selling_plan":false,"selling_plan_groups":[],"content":"This is a full-bodied whisky distinctive for its intense smokiness and layers of spice. v=1628603498","options":["Title"],"media":[{"alt":"Gurkha Premium Lager Beer Bottles 12x660ml - Beer","id":20440703238195,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":1.Success was attributed to an excellent marketing campaign, and being the first canned ale to be sold with a widget after Guinness. v=1700935404","options":["Size"],"media":[{"alt":null,"id":36502322413881,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":0.

Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street. It's inspired by the iconic Black Label and is a fail safe choice for any occasion, perfect for sharing.

In 2004, the owners (now known as InBev) announced plans to close the Strangeways Brewery and move most production from Manchester to Magor in South Wales and Samlesbury, Lancashire, with the loss of 60 jobs. The GBGs over the whole period do not comment adversely regarding the Bitter so it cannot be said that GBG comments were leading the decisions. The rise of the single grain is eagerly anticipated as the next wave in the spirits industry-and Haig Club Deluxe is at the forefront of the movement.

In 2010, it was speculated that InBev (known as Anheuser-Busch InBev from 2008 onwards) would attempt to sell the Boddingtons brand to another brewer after its failed attempt to sell the UK rights to Bass ale. In the 1970s, it was sometimes 5 days, but generally it was 6 or 7 days from the 1960s to the 1980s. Marston’s Pedigree Ale 8 x 500ml The brewers only use natural Burton spring water and traditional varieties of barley and hops (Maris Otter Barley, Fuggles and Goldings hops), rather than less expensive, commercially grown, modern hybrids. Whitbread acquired Boddingtons in 1989, and gave the bitter nationwide distribution and an increased marketing budget. This is a subject that holds great interest for me, as I "discovered" Boddingtons soon after moving to Lancaster in 1973, as it was on the bar in my college at Lancaster Uni, and in a few pubs in the area.
