Monte Alban is named after the ancient Aztec mountaintop settlement of the Zapotec Indians in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region known for its agave plants, both cultivated and wild. Edit: I forgot to mention the worms, there are about 30 shots of mezcal inc worm bottle and about 30 agave worms to match.Legend says that the worm gives strength to anyone brave enough to eat and some even believe it acts as an aphrodisiac. Burnt oak and hydrogen peroxide are the main “notes” and the only effect from eating the worm I remember was a mild case of Bali belly. Roughly 500 years ago, Spanish settlers began looking for a substitute for rum so they began distilling an Aztec soft -drink made from the Agave plant and they ended up with a premium spirit they named Mezcal. Purchased on a whim, I usually drink tequila (Don Julio reposado or anejo), figured I'd give mezcal a try.

Apocryphal legends note that the worm gives strength to anyone brave enough to gulp it down; some even believe it acts as an aphrodisiac. Monte Albán tequila and mezcal are made from 100% agave following traditional processes resulting in award-winning and varied taste experiences across the different Monte Albán expressions.

They are well established in the market, and many have had the experience of “tasting the Mezcal worm” with their signature Reposado. And I can almost guarantee that if anyone has more than 2 drinks of this cheap stuff, they’ll inevitably lose their lunch.

For nearly a thousand years, Monte Albán existed as an influential Zapotec center in Mesoamerica now known as Oaxaca, Mexico. It is made and distilled in the Oaxaca region of Mexico using 100% agave plants using centuries old techniques and traditions but most famously, each bottle contains the Con Gusano larvae… It has an aroma of spicy, oaky, green leafy notes. Many fond memories of getting absolutely hammered with good friends and having great times but it tastes nothing like the quality Mezcals we all enjoy today. The Monte Alban was the first Mezcal to be awarded an export contract and is probably one of the most authentic Mexican spirits.
