About this deal

Yet the drama here occurs in small increments, season by season, following nature’s rhythm through deaths and births, moments of joy and deep sorrow. The force of a strong character can sustain a novella-length work, but rarely manages to sustain something longer. This is also set around the time that Darwinian ideas and the debate about evolution are taking place and the tensions around these ideas also underlay the novella. Both stories in Angels and Insects are set after Charles Darwin’s work had revolutionised our understanding of the development of life on earth, and many of the key characters feel the impact of Darwin’s views upon the validity of their faith in God. William and Matty depart in a coach for Liverpool, eager to begin their new adventure and leave the past behind.

William and Eugenia begin a torrid romance, but as the couple become closer, the young scientist begins to realize that dark, disturbing things are happening behind the closed doors of the Alabaster manor. When Eugenia keeps producing twins, the comparison gets even stronger – she seems less and less human to him. Matty Crompton is an interesting character and she plays the part of the intellectual foil to Adamson very well. The story works like the trap of some exotic insect, which decorates the entrances with sweet nectars and soft fragrances, and then prepares an acid bath inside.I will with God’s help,” I tell her, and we go on together, choosing each day, each hour, each minute, the people we will be.

Perhaps there is rather too much about insect names in here, irrelevant to the plot and somewhat tedious. Especially Tennyson’s “In Memoriam”, which was a response to his 17 years of grief over the death of his beloved friend and fellow poet, Arthur. Both are well written and as always Byatt makes excellent use of poetry; especially Tennyson’s In Memoriam in the second novella. The action in the book is often so refreshing, because the reader has been waiting for chapters for something to actually happen! If there is no God, then why do the idle rich inhabit great country houses, while servants toil and suffer rape and abuse without a word of complaint. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products.

This is the first film I can remember in which anyone is attacked by moths; Adamson expresses himself in cautious evasions and toadying compliments, like an intellectual Uriah Heep; and when the plot's trap finally springs and a secret is discovered, the movie makes a point of not explaining exactly how this is accomplished. Mourning, death, longing for answers: this and more is creatively addressed here, but it's an odd mix of modern and Victorianism. A neglected housewife makes an unexpected friend at a nursing home, where she hears a true tale about an independent woman in 1920s Alabama, who ran the town diner, served food to people of color and protected her sister-in-law from an abusive spouse. What weakness there is in the novel is in the somewhat cursory manner many of the human relationships are explored. I bought Angels and Insects, probably like a lot of people, because the first story, Morpho Eugenia, was made into a very compelling costume drama more than twenty years ago (that I very much enjoyed), and I wanted to read the book from which the movie came.Too much learning can be a dangerous thing for a novelist who needs to separate the learned monograph from the illuminating tale. In Morpho Eugenia, an explorer realises that the behaviour of the people around him is alarmingly similar to that of the insects he studies.
