Sweeney doesn’t spell this out quite as clearly as would have been desirable, but his account of many of the key events in Russia since 1991 is invaluable, enabling readers to see the wood as well as many of the trees. Ukraine, always in our thoughts today, and John Sweeney gives an insight not only into Putin the man but also hardships faced by frontline war correspondents. An internal BBC investigation found that Sweeney's conduct at one point in the filming was clearly inappropriate, but also noted that Sweeney had apologised for his outburst and concluded that as a whole, filming of the documentary had been performed in a proper and fair manner. Sweeney covers all the important aspects of the last 20+ years, from the Moscow apartment bombings (see my review on Blowing Up Russia) to the horrific war of attrition in Chechnya.

How can anyone believe him when he continues to spew the 100% discredited Trump Russia collusion narrative. From this book it is impossible to estimate how many lost lives Putin has been responsible for, but the lists of those who were once close and have died in mysterious circumstances is extraordinary. My mother used to read a lot of books when I was a child and I saw how much enjoyment these books would bring her.Sweeney remarked that he lost his temper due to days of harassment by Davis and the Church, and a strong personal reaction to the psychiatry exhibit. John documents the corruption which Putin has spread across the world, including how it has permeated British political life and "celeb la la land" with former-KGB oligarchs in Britain hosting their famous Italian Bunga Bunga Parties frequented by Boris Johnson of other named glitterati (surely forever tarnished after this). It will give you chills and leave you mortified at the world's response to this dishonourable fascist who rules with a poisonous, iron fist. I minded them less as the book went on, because it became clear that this is a topic that author cares about very much. By the time I get to the Post Office building a great curl of sound walls up in front of me like a monster wave at sea. this book is a harrowing, yet extremely intriguing insight into the way the kremlin deals with people who disagree with them.

Martin also states that Sweeney departs from objective journalism as Sweeney “elevates [himself] to the position of the book’s leading character”. I also felt there are parts of the book that drift away from the central focus of the ‘killer’ in the Kremlin, interesting though it is I feel there could have been two books in there somewhere. He is a master at connecting the dots, though occasionally the dotted lines may be somewhat dubious. Drawing on eyewitness accounts and compelling testimony from those who have suffered at Putin's hand, we see the heroism of the Russian opposition, the bravery of the Ukrainian resistance, and the brutality with which the Kremlin responds to such acts of defiance, assassinating or locking away its critics, and stopping at nothing to achieve its imperialist aims. A gripping and explosive account of Vladimir Putin's tyranny, charting his rise from spy to tsar, exposing the events that led to his invasion of Ukraine and his assault on Europe.
