On that trip, they saw firsthand what had been named by the U.S. and world news as “The Romanian Orphan Crisis.” A wedding day message from God: ‘You will reach more people through your writing, than you will in all the years of your preaching.’ Over seven years, over 20 million copies of Bob Gass quarterly devotionals were printed. Each day more than one million people read his ideas, insights and illustrations and every week 3,000 readers wrote to say, "It's just what I needed today." This volume contains 365 of best days. Bob did not think of himself as a writer and said, ‘I didn’t want to write, I didn’t feel qualified, but my wife Debby wrote the prophetic word down and we did not forget it.’

On my wedding day, the pastor who married us gave me a prophetic word. He said, ‘The Lord has told me that you will reach more people through your writing, than you will in all the years of your preaching.’ I wasn’t a writer, I didn’t want to write, I didn’t feel qualified, but my wife Debby wrote the prophetic word down and we did not forget it. Wise people never make important decisions when they are in a tense emotional state. When Elijah found out that Queen Jezebel was after him, he was ready to give up his role as a prophet and die. So, God gave him forty days of rest, prayer, and recovery, before he decided what his next steps would be. He was now ready to decide on the basis of his faith in God, and not his fear of Jezebel. And his decision was very different at the end of forty days of rest than it would have been before he rested. The Word For Today is produced by Vision Christian Media (a non-denominational Christian ministry) under license by UCB International Ltd. What version of the Bible do you use? It all began in 1992, when Bob began jotting down inspiration he’d received from more than 40 years of being involved in Christian leadership, and from the Biblical principles and Godly values instilled in him by his mother. By the time Bob was 12, his heroes were not movie stars or sports celebrities but men and women of God. At this time, he gave his life to Christ.

In 1981 he resigned from pastoring and spent the next 15 years travelling across the U.S. and the world, as a popular guest speaker and evangelist. He also hosted his own television program called "The Breakfast Club." Bob realised then that one of the most read parts of a daily newspaper is often the horoscope section. He wrote, ‘Thank God we don’t need horoscopes, but I realised that by reading them, people want guidance, encouragement and they want answers. So I said to Ian and his team, “I’ll write a daily devotional for you. I’ll provide Scripture and thoughts for each day. You can give it out at conferences, set up a table and say to people, ‘would you like a free devotional?’”’ He was fortunate as a teenager to have Gordon Magee as his mentor. When he moved from Ireland to the United States, Magee offered to pay for Bob’s passage to America. Three years later, in 1994, Bob wrote the first edition of The Word For You Today, a daily devotional. Gass (born 1944 died 5 June 2019) was an American-based Christian pastor, broadcaster and author of several books. He was raised in Northern Ireland, but moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the United States when he was 18 years old. Gass, along with his brother Neil and sister Ruth, were brought up in a strong Christian tradition by their mother after their father had died when Bob was just thirteen. He became involved in Christian leadership for over 40 years, but much of his inspiration was based on the Biblical principles instilled in him by his mother. [4]

And people say to me I wish God would talk to me. I look at them and saying, well, exact ly what would you like him to say? Because if He talks to you, he may not be telling you what you want to hear. So I’ve got into this kind of argument with the Lord. You might say ‘how did you know it was The Lord?’… Because I would never have told myself to do that. And the devil is called a thief, so I know he would never have told me to do it. So that just leaves the one other option. [4] Astounded by the response he received in the United States, Gass offered his devotional readings to Gareth Littler, the former Chief Executive Officer of UCB, to encourage their listeners. In April 1994, The Word For Today was launched with an initial print run of 3,500 copies and circulated to UCB's supporters within the UK. The reach was later expanded to other parts of the world. Bob was an itinerant preacher having a TV show for a time in the United States. When he married his incredible wife Debby in 1991 he was given a prophecy. It said that his writing would reach more people than his preaching ever would. Soon afterwards the UCB Word of Today began with a print run of 3500. As times changed Bob’s printed writings went to 400,000 people every quarter and quarterly digital reach to over 7.6 million people. Over many years, the devotional has impacted millions of lives and although today is a sad day of loss, we are also thankful for the incredible legacy Bob has left behind.
