About this deal

Not what I would have expected or even have hoped for, but that's what makes it all the more amazing. In many ways the ebbs and flows of the characters felt very organic, and for all the cynicism built into the series about how bad humanity can act, and the entropic evil before the beginning of time, there is still a lot of heroic hope here. Sure the prose is slightly purple; the technobabble is piled high and deep and it's more science fantasy than science fiction. The action and the various factions have at times in the series been a bit chaotic and harder to follow.

Why torture it to those formats with all this padding and endless reminiscing, if you can tell a compelling story in one novel of average length? In a review for Locus, Russell Letson praised Shards of Earth as an example of "recombinant sci-fi" because it combines several large ideas into a "busy, complicated, surprising [concoction]. I was also sad to see the crew of the Vulture God seperated instead of working together, as to my mind that was when they were at their best. A balance has to be struck between providing enough explanation for the readers to be satisfied but leaving enough unknown to preserve the mystery. Publishers Weekly wrote a positive review for Eyes of the Void, stating that the author's "intelligent worldbuilding captures the essence of classic space opera".

Just finished Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Lords of Uncreation" and loved it, and the whole trilogy, so much. It’s got a scrappy little crew, feuding polities, and an existential threat in the form of aliens who are beyond humanity in just about every sense. In the first layer, Tchaikovsky develops the individual characters, primarily the crew members of the Vulture God. Under all the idiotic amount of unnecessary characters, stupid plot devices, multiple deus ex machina twists, obvious plot armour, etc, etc, etc is a hidden, crazy good 200-250 page story, which could have been awesome.

But the absolute silliest, stupidest part was when the "great voice" starts speaking to them and Kris uses her lawyer skills to argue with omnisentient beings who so far have been thinking beyond human thought but are now suddenly caught in a shitty word trap as they hand wave away all explanations.

Un ja vēl spēlē iesaistās Aklu the Unspeakable (the Razor and the Hook) par kura nozīmi Hegemonijā var tikai minēt, tad lietas, kļūst pavisam dīvainas. The best thing I can say about it is that it does exactly what the last book in a trilogy should do. It seemed a bit convenient that in a certain place people aren't able to lie etc, but I guess it was part of the craziness of the universe beyond the understanding of the human characters (and most of the alien characters). The characters have become some of my favorites and they all get plenty to do with great development amd satisfying arcs.
