About this deal

The first difference you might notice is that the HD660S comes in a bigger (and nicer) box, with a better overall package. Silly, I know, but I think a stealth black look helps put the focus on where it belongs: sound quality, not looks. I spent weeks feeding the HD 660 S with a hugely varied playlist stretching from Bjork to Wagner, and Ed Rush to Fleetwood Mac, and across everything from vinyl to CD to hi-def audio via Tidal’s excellent streaming service. Overall, they are great versatile headphones for a wide variety of music genres but their sub-bass might be lacking a bit for bass-heavy music. The Sennheiser HD 660S also features extremely light aluminum voice coils that ensure the highest impulse fidelity.

You would be hard pressed telling it apart from the similarly numbered Sennheiser headphones which is not. The pure and effortless sound of the HD 660S is reflected in its new matte black and anthracite design. Maybe the stealth black look and smartphone capable efficiency is enough to tip the balance for some. The thing to me that's very interesting is that, assuming it is an HD 700 driver, how little the driver performance itself effects the performance of the headphone as a whole. The HD 660S2 also comes with significantly shorter cables the the HD 660S – another indicator that Sennheiser seems self-aware of the more everyday-use reputation that the 660S has earned over the years.

The bass and guitar blend nicely as the bass doubles the signature guitar riff through the verses, and the bass drum has just enough punch to keep the song engaging.

I wouldn’t say it has great punch/slam because of the lean-ness of its bass, but it is overall more energetic and aggressive throughout the frequency range than either Senn. The Sennheiser HD 600 and the Sennheiser HD 660 S are similar headphones overall, but the HD 600 are a better choice for audiophiles who prefer a more neutral sound profile. Despite the weak soundstage and imaging, I found the HD 660S’ instrument separation to be outstanding.My experience with the three beyerdynamic DT880 versions with varying impedance gives me the strong belief that higher impedance headphones will outperform lower impedance cans of the same design. The HD 660S’ packaging is definitely on the more minimalistic side, but it does include just about everything you need to start listening. We also measure a more open-sounding soundstage on the HD 650, but since their design is the same, we expect them to sound very similarly. These headphones don’t have a microphone for online games, can’t be customized like most gaming headsets with a software, and can’t be used in loud environments.The HD 660S was launched with a special video and unlike you’d expect it doesn’t feature the typical marketing talk.

The planar magnetic HiFiMan Sundara 2018 are better critical listening headphones than the Sennheiser HD 660 S.
