About this deal

When English bartender Daphne Henderson arrived on Jost Van Dyke — the smallest of the four main islands that make up the British Virgin Islands — in 1970, she found a stretch of pristine white beachfront that she presumably never wanted to leave. After sampling four different Painkiller drink recipes on three different islands, I found my personal favorite. If you can’t make to the islands for a true Painkiller drink, here’s how I found the best recipe. Soggy Dollar Painkiller Drink History Instructions: Combine all the ingredients in a tall glass. Garnish it with pineapple and maraschino Cherries, if desired.

My first sample was served to me by a smiling young lady in a beach bar at Jolly Beach on the island of Antigua. Sandra’s beach bar is a fun spot practically on the beach and the drinks are reasonably priced. The in the main drink recipe is the same, but I believe they increased the amount of coconut cream and it harmonized with my taste buds! The bar (which gets its name from the bills that would get “soggy” as travelers waded thorugh the water onto the beach from their boats) has become a Mecca of sorts for Caribbean aficionados, an unmissable stop on any sailing jaunt in the Virgin Islands, a place often serenaded by Kenny Chesney in his odes to the green-hilled islands of the northeastern Caribbean. Quite what the actual components are in this rum? I’m not sure quite what the “triple distillation” has added is lost on me. It’s probably dulled the flavours a fair bit. It sounds good when used in Vodka terminology but it’s a big turn off for any flavourful spirit that doesn’t rely on tasting of nothing. It’s not particularly punchy or hefty but it’s a nicely balanced nose that doesn’t do much wrong to be fair. It doesn’t smell particularly old – I’d guess around 3-5 maybe lower in terms of the overall blend. It’s honest enough though and it isn’t a particularly pricy rum. Ground nutmeg — If you’re looking for something to top your painkiller drink, there is simply nothing better than ground nutmeg, with its savory and rich flavor. But, if you’re looking to make some substitutions, you could get away with ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and maybe even with allspice.

Instructions: Pour all the ingredients into your large pitcher. Mash the strawberries slightly and stir to mix well. Pour into glasses over ice.

Overall it tastes quite young, 3 year old tops for this and I would suggest it likely has a high proportion of quite young column distilled rum either from Angostura or Cruzan. It’s not awful and it maintains a decent “rummy” profile, particularly with the woody notes but it isn’t hugely flavourful. You can totally make this Painkiller recipe portable and pre-make a mix that is easily transportable to the beach. To do this, simply make Painkiller mix in bulk as instructed above, portion out the amount of mix you want to bring, and add your rum in advance.A perfect summer drink, Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri, is made with rum, sugar, and lime juice–one of the best thirst-quencher while at the beach. Straight from the Soggy Dollar bar. Though we should warn you, it could get quite addictive. Jump to: Instructions: Combine all the ingredients in your blender with ice except the orange slices. Blend until smooth and pour into glasses. Garnish with orange slices and serve.
