Having been released in 2018, the X-701 is a relatively new addition to Zebra’s family of rugged pens. This is an all-purpose, all-weather, all-temperature (-30 degrees F to 250 degrees F) pen that was designed for use in every scenario.Rugged and sturdy, this stainless steel ballpoint pen can take a beating and is designed for the serious communicator looking to embody their personal style in their writing instrument. The line also has a tactical ballpoint, mechanical pencil, permanent marker, and pen and pencil set. I have found the only weak point for me was the clip, to remedy this I use the Fisher bullet pen clips in stainless they are way stronger and look a little better in my opinion. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a quality ballpoint that looks expensive and gives a steady flow of ink.

Rugged and sturdy, this stainless steel ballpoint pen can take a beating and is designed for the serious communicator.So, pen aficionados would use the F-701 refill with the Zebra F-401 hardware—a hack that was so popular that the manufacturer combined the two in their new design. It is very easy to differentiate between the old and new F-701s: the old versions with the plastic ring around the knock uses black plastic while the new ones use silver metal. In summary, the X-701, in many ways, feels like a step backward from the F-701, not a more extreme version (as the “X” in the name would suggest). The F-701 (sometimes written as the F701) is the top-of-the-line retractable ballpoint in Zebra’s Steel Series. I also use the Fisher space pen refills which require the removal of the plastic guide cone in the tip.
