About this deal

The best Nerf guns and toy guns from X Shot have been a major source of fun for kids (and adults, including one or two at Which? To find the best toy blasters, we bought the bestsellers from leading brands Nerf and X Shot and put them through a string of tough tests to see which ones will give you the edge in your garden battles. Kids' verdict: Not quite their favourite overall, but the kids loved the quirky design and easy firing mechanism of the Claw Hunter. Being a hip-fire blaster, accuracy (outside of dart type) largely depends on platform familiarity, but given how light the blaster is, aiming isn’t hard compared to something like a Prometheus or Titan. Sometimes, toys come along that you didn’t know you needed, until they appear on a shelf or at a Toy Fair.

We couldn't resist putting them to the test to finally put the debate to bed over which toy guns are best. It's not as accurate as the X Shot Dino Attack Claw Hunter but it fires further, so adults can still enjoy a slight competitive edge. They can be taken back apart, although there’s enough plastic to make the entire operation hard to do.

It comes in the usual Xshot shell format (blue, white, and orange panels that all screw together), with nice details in the molds. There were also two "limited edition" series themed around video game streamers, X-Shot FaZe and X-Shot Ninja. But reloading after every shot became tiresome and the adults expected a longer range from a toy that prioritises accuracy over capacity.

The short range and repetitive need to pull back the handle to load up another foam dart became tiresome. Adults' verdict: Not the smoothest to fire, but adults enjoyed the long range, high firepower and pinpoint accuracy of this blaster. We bought every toy we tested and we don't take gifts so you can be confident that our reviews are neutral and free from bias.Other series would release under the brand as well: the 2015 Bug Attack line, the 2019 X-Shot Chaos line, the 2020 Dino Attack line, the 2022 Skins line, and the 2023 X-Shot Insanity line. We also judged how easily you could fire several shots in quick succession, and noted how much the toys jammed when firing. Don't aim for the head – even if you're wearing protection over your eyes, it can still be quite uncomfortable to get hit by a foam dart around sensitive spots such as your ears or mouth, and your opponents won't thank you for it. In 2013, the brand expanded with three series all released at once: X-Shot Excel, X-Shot Girl, and X-Shot Zombie. Or discover the super cool Hawk Eye blaster featuring a targeting scope at the top of the barrel to help you hit your targets with precision.
