Okay, so here in the States we don't really have those kinds of biscuits - a good butter cookie will do. This is a world where there is no problem that can't be solved by a strong cup of tea, a nice fire and a good meal. People in times of trouble, dealing with grief and miserable lives are freed by taking a chance and letting themselves be open to love the second time around.They explore themes of family, love and loss, and of life’s upheavals, but with a grittiness and fearless observation that set a benchmark for many younger novelists. I think that Rosamund Pilcher needs a new agent because apparently the same desecration happened to the filming of Coming Home! We know, after a time, that they share a bed and are lovers, because Elfrida tells her cousin Carrie, but beyond that, we're left in the dark. There tends to be a warm-hearted and generous type and a cold and selfish type, with not much in between. Pilcher started writing when she was only seven and saw her first story get published when she was eighteen years old.The town where the characters purchased essential supplies, and also bought most of their thoughtful Christmas gifts was Kingsferry (Tain). On 7 December 1946, she married Graham Hope Pilcher, a war hero and jute industry executive who died in March 2009. This is excellent 'comfort read' stuff - and a Pilcher novel never fails to make me long for an English country cottage. Readers may find so much enjoyment in Winter Solstice that they'll want to revisit some of Pilcher's other books, such as The Shell Seekers and Coming Home. Her novels have always celebrated the simple beauties and pleasures of ever-changing weather, warming a home with friends, family, food and drink, overcoming pain to re-find love.

It focuses on an elderly British woman, Penelope Keeling, who relives her life in flashbacks, and on her relationship with her adult children.Keeling's life was not extraordinary, but it spans "a time of huge importance and change in the world.
