About this deal

This book was beautiful – a book on love and courage demonstrated in different ways, showing that there is no one way to love or be brave. The story originates in Paris during the Second World War, moving on to both Paris and California in the 1950s.

This is such a heartbreaking story which is so beautifully written, I felt empathy for every single character. One woman must make the hardest decision of her life in this unforgettably moving story of resistance and faith during one of the darkest times in history. Towards the end of the Second World War two people meet on a platform next to a train bound for Auschwitz, the exchange that takes place between them will have a bearing on their lives forever more. They are adapting to their new country, speaking only English, and never revisiting the trauma they fled in Paris 9 years earlier. Druart shows how many Parisians struggled with this: How many times had we stood by while our neighbors and friends were deported to God knows where?

Druart, born on the Isle of Wight and educated in Leicester, moved to Paris in 1993, where she remains a teacher. It was 1944 in Paris and Jean-Luc Beauchamp had been working with the French Railway Department since he left school at fifteen. I like to put characters in difficult situations where their morality is tested, and then add a twist.

They don't know exactly where the Germans are taking people they've arrested but no-one ecer comes back.Perfect for readers of EARLY ONE MORNING and THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, this is a gripping, moving debut novel of courage, survival and the endurance of hope. As I was listening to the (excellent) audiobook, it took me a little time to follow the different narrations and understand who was who in relation to each other. Tai istorija apie pasiaukojimą, apie begalinę tėvų meilę vaikui, kai savo pačių laimė aukojama vardan sūnaus laimės ir gerovės. Even Jean-Luc and Charlotte’s escape across the Pyrenees is devoid of perilous complications and this lack of credibility prevented any meaningful build-up of tension, undermining the entire novel and making it feel like lightweight women’s fiction. Immediately I felt for these characters, they were true reflections of real people and I felt every one of their heartaches, breakdowns and struggles.

The story, told through multiple perspectives, shifts back to 1944 when Jean-Luc is a railroad worker. Hachette Australia acknowledges and pays our respects to the past, present and future Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.O livro alterna entre Paris em 1944, onde Sarah, pouco depois de dar à luz e a caminho de Auchwitz, entrega o seu filho a um desconhecido e Califórnia em 1953, onde Jean Luc e a sua mulher Charlotte vivem uma vida tranquila com o filho Sam e onde nem sonham com o passado. While trying to sabotage a rail line, hoping to at least interfere with the transport of Drancy prisoners to points east, Jean-Luc suffers a broken leg.

This action takes him in all sorts of danger crossing the Pyrenees mountains with Charlotte who decides to go with him. I remember when I saw the movie Sophie’s Choice, and I sat there watching Meryl Streep making the most critical decision of her life during that pivotal scene.Although I was a bit rattled by the leveling of criminal charges against Jean-Luc, who fled France with his girlfriend and baby in tow. And while this was a compelling read, this book didn’t add anything particularly unique to this genre. Even in places where the forces of darkness have yet to seize control, many are faced with difficult decisions. Throughout I had wished Sarah and David would be depicted as richly but I understood not every backstory could be told. The Post-War scenes added character depth that I needed, it provided me with backgrounds to these characters and a way to get to know them before they evolved into the people we meet at the beginning of the story.
