About this deal

They agree to work together to free Joey; once they have done so, they flip a coin to decide who will take ownership of Joey. Grandfather sells Joey to Albert for one English penny and the promise that he will care for the horse and tell the story of his Emilie. However, Joey forms a deep bond with the farmer's son, Albert: the two become soul mates as Albert works hard to transform Joey into a farm horse (his father threatened to get rid of Joey unless he could work with Zoey in the fields). Later, David and two horses from the hospital are killed by a stray shell, putting Albert in a state of depression, as David had cared for him like a brother.

The bond between horse and master is sweet and profound, and a love of animals shows the commonality between people on both sides of the conflict. Both the Allied and German soldiers see the wounded Joey in no-man's-land, and a British soldier wins possession of him by flipping a coin with a German soldier and winning. The production opened on 17 October 2007 and was met with critical acclaim – its use of life-size puppets of horses from the Handspring Puppet Company won an Olivier Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award and London Critics' Circle Theatre Award for design.Joey remains at the head of the cavalry and is ridden now by Trooper Warren: a kind, gentle lad who is not a particularly good horseman but whose conscientious treatment keeps Joey going throughout the harshness of the winter.

Mother says that Father’s worries about the mortgage—secured so Albert could have the farm one day—drive him to drink. Before she died, Grandfather made her a promise that he would do everything he could to find the horses again and take care of them. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. Joey's tremendous courage touches soldiers of both armies; in turn, he experiences warmth and kindness amid the carnage of war, and homesickness for his old life on the farm. The War finally comes to an end but the army decides the horses, including Joey, will be sold at auction in France. In 2011, director Steven Spielberg adapted the novel into a film starring Jeremy Irvine, Tom Hiddleston, Emily Watson, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Following the end of the war, his parents divorced, and his mother subsequently remarried Jack Morpurgo. The story recounts the experiences of Joey, a horse bought by the Army for service in World War I in France and the attempts of 15-year-old Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home. Although he is an excellent rider, he makes up for his short stature by bullying the horses in his care. Friedrich sees how futile the fighting is and that the soldiers are being manipulated into nonsensical hostilities; all he wants is to go back to everyday life in Germany as Butcher Friedrich.
