About this deal

Over time, as you try more and more sticks, you’ll develop a more intuitive understanding of which ones feel the best to you – and you’ll start to become more aware of what you personally prefer. You may well find that your favourite drummer’s signature stick is the perfect fit for you and your playing style, and they tick all the boxes for taper, thickness, length and tip. Focus on the size first – choosing the tip shape and taper length is a bit more technical and requires a bit more experience. The good news is that drumsticks aren't that expensive, unless you go for some of the more exotic synthetic sticks (which we also cover here), so you can reasonably and affordably invest in a few pairs to experiment.

You can also get natural sticks, gritted sticks and double glazed/lacquered sticks - which are shiny. Once you are familiar with these different sizes, you can then try to explore the many other drumstick sizes and signature models that exist. This means that you can compare two different brands, even if the numbering system that each company uses is slightly different. As a rule of thumb, it's best to think that the higher numbers are designed for more delicate work, whereas the lower numbers are designed for the heavy beats! Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. The Promark Activegrip sticks are the world’s very first heat-activated drumsticks that feature a heat-activated grip coating solution that gets tackier as your body temperature rises. Introducing the Vic Firth Studio Sessions: A series featuring Vic Firth Artists Giulliana Merello, Ji Su Jung, Pedro Segundo, Jharis Yokley, Nicole Casino, Damon Grant and Chris Coleman, filmed at Power Station New England. The wood tips also have a tendency to chip, so they may not be intact at the end of a 50-minute set. This cool new innovation provides you with better grip of the drumsticks without sacrificing feel or feeling too sticky or rubbery. If you’ve never tried 5B drumsticks out before, you should give them a go to feel exactly how they compare to 5As.

The Vater Los Angeles 5A drumsticks provide an amazing feel that has enough power for heavier rock music, yet also enough lightness for styles such as jazz or folk. Backed up by years of manufacturing refinement and design innovation, Vic Firth's sticks and mallets provide a reliable and consistent playing experience, helping drummers achieve their best performance possible. The Vic Firth 5As are the most popular option out of those three brands, but the sticks from Promark and Vater are also solid options. After 10 more steps of careful honing, refining, and then finishing, you finally have your much endeared Vic Firth American Classic 5A drumsticks.A stick with the number 7 would be pretty thin, whereas a stick with the number 2 would be pretty chunky. In rare cases where Vic Firth does not make a stick, we’ve labelled it below with the size from drumstick maker Vater. There are many different types of drum stick materials but these are the five main types that are commonly known as the best for all-round playing. Vic Firth as a company has produced the most popular and diverse range of drumsticks for nearly 60 years.

The American Classic Range includes some of the most popular sizes for drummers and is the starting point for many drummers trying their first sticks. Then, as you develop, you can start exploring different models that suit your particular playing needs. Being arguably the biggest name in drum sticks, Vic Firth have an impressive line up of stars in their Signature Stick range, including Steve Gadd, Jojo Mayer, Dave Weckl and the one and only Buddy Rich.So far it feels very nice and natural to hold (compared with the ones that came along with my MPS-850 set). The 5A drumsticks are made from Hickory wood, and they feature a medium taper plus a teardrop wood tip for rich cymbal sounds. This would be perfect for jazz or quieter styles – when needing to play a bit more gently or move very fast around the kit. They’re very versatile, and they’ll allow you to play both hard and soft to get varying tones from your kit. A shorter taper makes the stick feel front heavy, a longer taper makes the stick ping back towards you more quickly.
