It was here, amid the verdant vineyards, that Vecchia Romagna began its journey, distilling brandy that would soon become the pride of the nation. Smooth and seriously easy-drinking, Stara Sokolova is a seven-year-old plum brandy that combines notes of vanilla, orange and blossom to spectacular effect.

The brand owes its name and origin to the Romagna region of Italy, renowned for its lush landscapes, gastronomy, and viticulture. By adopting this method, Vecchia Romagna ensures that its brandy retains the full-bodied essence of the grapes, resulting in a drink that is both smooth and flavorful. This is a rare 1970s bottling of Vecchia Romagna's Etichetta Bianca brandy, complete with the distinctive smiling fellow with hair made of grapes on the label. This bottling of Vecchia Romagna Etichetta Nera brandy was made with Trebbiano grapes in the French "Charentais" style sometime in the 1960s and it's in remarkable condition.Hailing from the highly-awarded cognac producer, this limited-edition bottle is inspired by the iconic brand’s red-and-gold design, while the stuff inside sings with notes of vanilla, dried fruits and sandalwood. Having spent six years in French oak barrels, the Calvados XO is packed with notes of apple, nutmeg and cocoa, best served as a digestif over ice.

Vecchia Romagna is more than just a name in the world of Italian spirits; it is a testament to Italy's deep-rooted love for brandy and its tradition of distillation. It’s refreshing, light and sweet with aromas of bakewell tart and marzipan, not dissimilar to a Pedro Ximénez sherry, and is aged for 20 years. The brandy from this range is usually distilled using Ugni Blanc grapes, although with this bottle being from the 1970s, this is difficult to verify. He adds: “Given that brandy is almost always made from wine grapes, many expressions offer rich, fruity flavours, enhanced and given extra complexity by ageing in oak barrels – in the finest examples, often for decades.

Interestingly, the bottle is very different from other Vecchia Romagna bottles we have seen - it's tall and thin, in contract to the more rounded bottles we usually see. Certainly, there’s a sense of pomp and ceremony synonymous with brandy, the sweet spirit produced by distilling wine or fermenting fruit juice (although these types must be marked as such on the label). Made from a blend of Pinot Noir and Merlot grapes, this Austrian brandy is amber in colour and rich in taste, aged for 13 years in oak barrels. While aged varieties can be sipped and savoured neat, younger brandies are often consumed in long drinks with mixers and plenty of ice – or in a number of decadent cocktails. It comes presented in a rather stylish bottle alongside its original box - a neat little rarity for collectors.
