About this deal

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). So, it is pretty important to have a highly adjustable stand, especially if you need all of the vertical real estate. With the amount of movement you have in the topmost position, you can turn the display in its side, however, Dell advises against doing so.

For those who prefer a graphical representation, these deviations are shown in the contour map below. This monitor does not use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to regulate the backlight at any brightness level. Brighter shades such as lights, explosions and the sky had a little graininess from the screen surface but still appeared relatively smooth. Granted, the U2417H's 1,920-by-1,080 panel can't match that of the Acer H257HU (2,560 by 1,440), but its overall performance is on par with the Acer H257HU, and it is equipped with more features, including a fully adjustable stand, a high-speed USB hub, three digital video inputs, and a video output for daisy-chaining multiple monitors.

This is to stop you mistaking it for a DP input and wondering why you don’t get a signal when everything is connected up.

There is a K-Slot towards the bottom left with the stand or arm attaching using a quick-release bracket mechanism to the centre of the screen. The depth of blacks and other dark shades here was actually good for an IPS-type panel and was quite consistent in that respect – with the exception of the ‘glow affected’ areas. It only comes with a display port to mini display port cable, so you'll need to get an hdmi or display port cable cable separately. Given how close ‘sRGB’ was to key target parameters (bearing in mind points about white point made earlier) and how the image looked to our eyes we were quite happy to use this instead. The factory calibration is very strong and colour reproduction within the sRGB colour space is a definite strength here. The monitor reacted promptly to changes in scene brightness and dimmed to quite low levels for predominantly dark content. The monitor delivered a great variety of shades in an accurate and highly consistent way – rich with appropriate depth throughout the screen. First, let’s mention the lack of vintage ports, like the VGA and DVI connectors, which are still used in some professional studios. The “IPS-type” panel – it’s actually Samsung’s PLS technology – runs at 60Hz and has a reasonable 6ms response time, while the 1080p resolution is entirely typical for a display of this size. A value greater than DeltaE 3 is considered significant deviation that some users would readily notice by eye.

Claiming 99% sRGB and 85% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage out of the box, the Dell UltraSharp 24 could be a shoe-in for photo and video editing too. Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode. This excludes the reading at ‘0%’ brightness, where the black point readings provided insufficient accuracy. From left to right, you have the Quick Preset button, Brightness/Contrast adjustment, and detailed menu. As monitors go, this one has been the absolute best 1080p display for matching the colors of the Retina.
