About this deal

You won’t get many more popular apps as the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+ don’t have Linux compatible apps. This has the same footage in various formats, allowing for direct comparison of the overall HDR performance.

Like most affordable TVs, the highs and lows are something that benefit from a boost from a soundbar, but I don’t think this is a necessary purchase if you don’t plan on watching many intense action scenes. Finally in the negative column, motion handling is only solid rather than great, even with the Tru Motion feature active.Used to determine a user's inclusion in an experiment and the expiry of experiments a user has been included in. One final strength of the 50UK3163DB’s pictures is that dark scenes aren’t impacted by any really distracting backlight blooming or general clouding inconsistencies. And as these sets launch ahead of the inevitable Black Friday/Christmas rush, expect to see them carry over to 2022 as well. First off, I found that Dolby Atmos offers a slightly fuller sound with deeper bass than the TV’s speakers produce with Atmos off.

While the TV's interface is easy to navigate a major issue you'll notice out of the gate is that some key streaming apps are missing. We particularly like the feet – a set of chrome-finished, ice skate-style blades, only a little flatter. The ability to play audio/video files from the network is unreliable: the "audio video sharing" option often disappears from the list of sources, even though it is enabled in settings. Or that you’ll be able to enjoy variable refresh rate gaming, or the eARC HDMI loopthrough system that might have let you pass Dolby Atmos soundtracks losslessly through to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver. The UI is serviceable, neatly laid out into rows of features and supporting a decent number of apps including those that fall under the umbrella of Freeview Play such as BBC iPlayer and All 4; with BritBox, TikTok, Twitch, YouTube and Deezer onboard too. There is synchronisation with Google’s digital assistant through the ‘Ok Google’ ecosystem that connects a compatible product to the TV.

The SDR picture performance is good, but to avoid clipping, turn the Contrast setting down to 82, and also turn the Sharpness down to zero or the picture will look overly processed. Its proprietary ‘TRU’ system includes elements aimed at improving the playback of motion, reducing the jagged look curved edges can exhibit (especially when they’re not native 4K), and enhancing contrast. The 50UK3163DB’s HDR efforts aren’t the only way it makes an unexpected mark on the affordable TV world, either.

The main gripe we have with the TV's design, though, is the green power light at the base of the screen. I was able to pick out ample amounts of detail, from the thin lines decorating Joyce’s corduroy jacket and the wisps of smoke coming from her lips to the individual hairs atop Hopper’s head and the creases worrying his forehead.USB Record is available on certain Toshiba models – check the Specification section of the relevant model for further information. My preferred setting was Cinema mode, which has a warm quality to it with deeper reds and more orange-toned yellows. The 50UK3163DB’s remote is similarly big and chunky - but that’s not actually a bad thing given that it allows it to carry large, spaciously laid out buttons that fall easily to hand even in a dark room. That’s further affected by the UK31’s lack of luminance – 343 nits is the most it can muster in its Natural picture mode. Expect the usual list of skills, with the ability to jump between inputs, tweak volume and bring up apps.
