About this deal

The result of all that work is a space unrecognizable from what it was before, with expansive covered outdoor areas and rustic inside dining rooms decorated in wood and copper tones. While Tincup checks all the criteria to be a bourbon, it does not label itself as one – likely for marketing purposes. It’s still there in the background but instead of a strong showing at the end, it’s now just another part of the show. If you’re an avid reader here at Barrel and Brew, you know we like our rye whiskey, especially an MGP rye. Luke has a preference for Rye whiskeys but has tasted over 250 different whiskeys to date varying from bourbons to scotches.

Tin Whiskey opens in Cocoa Village after 2-year renovation

On the finish, there’s the unmistakable peppery spice of the rye content that adds a good bit of kick and stays with you long after the liquid is gone. Everything is bold and beautiful, so really all you’re doing is chilling the drink a touch and proofing it down for those who thought there was a bit too much power in that glass. After that you have glass engravings of the Tincup name, mining symbols, and a statement that says it’s cut from the whiskey is cut with water from the Rocky Mountains.

i should explain that i was an autobody technician for 34 years and this has the distinct taste of paint thinner. The name comes from gold miners in Colorado, who used to drink their whiskey from a tin cup - as such, the lid of Tincup American Whiskey can be used as a drinking vessel. Those deep and rich flavors are balancing well with the bitter ginger beer, and the peppery spice is adding some complexity to the finish. It’s higher in rye content than the usual bourbons, but it nevertheless makes the cut to be labeled as such.

Tincup American Whiskey : The Whisky Exchange

For marketing purposes and to pay homage to the old, small town (now a ghost town), Jess names the whiskey Tincup. There is street parking on Florida Avenue and Oleander Street, and a city parking lot is less than a block away. It doesn't boast the sweet vanilla signature you'd be expecting, so if that's what you're after, you'll be disappointed. In 1998, Jess Graber (a volunteer firefighter) was trying to put out a fire in George Stranahan’s barn. When the city put in new curbing in front of the restaurant, making it difficult to access the parking spaces there, she reworked renovation plans to include expanded patios.

The only downside I would put to this whiskey is that although it's flavor is great and it has some interesting things going for it, it's not at the top of its game when it comes to nose, which smells quite floral, but mostly minty, and almost a little perfumey. The bottle makes no bones about the fact that the majority of this whiskey comes from MGP in Illinois, but there’s a twist here.
