About this deal

I purchase three books at a time to give away to those I love and for those who love them to read along and support that persons journey of conscious choice. So, this is my journey for the next year and I can say, I've been alcohol free for two weeks now and I'm feeling really good.

Grace may well be great company and funny (she claims to be both), but here perhaps the book might have benefited from more ‘show’ and less ‘tell’ - as it stands the writing isn't witty.I was not a heavy drinker (one glass of wine per night, bit more on the weekends), just someone who wanted to cut down. In a world seemingly untouched by alcohol, Tara grew up in the heart of a small, deeply conservative Southern town. Welcome back to the This Naked Mind podcast, your source of inspiration and guidance on the path to living alcohol-free. Alcohol isn’t what’s making that “homeless guy in Las Vegas,” (who she’s continually referencing) miserable and living on the street; there are other causes that she’s ignoring.

Here was the explanation I had been seeking to validate my cold-turkey, no-looking-back decision to quite drinking, and how I had experienced virtually no withdrawal symptoms or cravings.I am looking to moderate my drinking by following a 9-step moderation program that involves 30 days of abstinence, close examination of motivations to drink, setting clear limits, and keeping track of weekly drinking.

None of my family or friends behave like the people described in this book, making her personal anecdotes completely inapplicable. Grace points out that 75% of people who recover from alcohol dependence do so without seeking any professional help. This is despite the fact that I ALWAYS add whatever book I’m reading to Goodreads, even if it’s embarrassing.I can say that I was the first person in my group of friends and fellow drinkers to try Guinness and trained myself to like it. You won’t be pining for a drink or avoiding social situations because of temptation - and that is true freedom. In any given moment, the more you focus on one aspect of your experience, the less you notice everything else.

But the reality is, it’s a drug and we’re all susceptible to at least an emotional attachment to it, not to mention physical. Grace’s claim that she has discovered a way to stop drinking permanently, with no cravings, sense of loss, or 12-step programs. In adding this book, I was admitting that I didn’t have full control over my relationship with alcohol, and that’s something massive, or that’s what society has always told me anyway. Her theory is that our conscious (surface level) attention may know these facts but it is our subconscious mind that makes the decisions.
