About this deal

the population of Europe and North America are white, an attack on “whiteness” is implicitly an attack on the West itself. Far from being a nationalistic defence of the West, the book is actually sympathetic to a genuine cosmopolitan, liberal outlook. Although Murray will doubtless be condemned by some for his supposed heretical thinking, he should be celebrated. One example of many is the Greek philosopher Pythagoras whose teachings have influenced Aristotle and Plato, and whose discovery of ratios involved in music, forms the basis of harmony in Western music composition. One can only hope that today's reverse racism will be a passing phase in our civilization's development, though it's legacy will surely taint our progress for years to come.

The real problem, however, is not winning arguments but the fact that bread and butter issues like the cost-of-living crisis can seem more immediate than Culture War issues that, being impacted by education and upbringing, can take at least a generation to work out.

Indeed, a teacher at a school in Michigan claimed that: “teachers must “challenge the whiteness” of the claim that Shakespeare’s works are “universal”. His calm but concise and penetrating manner, effortlessly dispels their myth and exposes their disturbing double standard. By celebrating the West’s achievements and pointing out the anti-Western character of the new antiracism, Murray once again provides a valuable counterweight to bad ideas that have gone mainstream. There was no need to circle the wagons around English culture in the same way that conservatives do to the Western tradition today. The West’s enemy is not a menacing foreign power armed with fighter planes and heavy artillery, stresses Murray, but Westerners themselves – our civilisation’s biggest threat comes from “people inside the West intent on pulling apart the fabric of our societies, piece by piece.

A British journalist fulminates against Black Lives Matter, critical race theory, and other threats to White privilege.

And Murray makes it clear that he understands why people flee war-ravaged nations and dictatorships to seek safety in the West. His answer is that it has led to a resurgence of racialised thinking that sees everything through the lens of race and racial identity. In “The Strange Death of Europe” Murray was profoundly pessimistic about the future direction of the West.
