There was no need to circle the wagons around English culture in the same way that conservatives do to the Western tradition today. The West’s enemy is not a menacing foreign power armed with fighter planes and heavy artillery, stresses Murray, but Westerners themselves – our civilisation’s biggest threat comes from “people inside the West intent on pulling apart the fabric of our societies, piece by piece.

And Murray makes it clear that he understands why people flee war-ravaged nations and dictatorships to seek safety in the West. His answer is that it has led to a resurgence of racialised thinking that sees everything through the lens of race and racial identity. In “The Strange Death of Europe” Murray was profoundly pessimistic about the future direction of the West.
