About this deal

A pirate singer tempts a group of pirates to seek treasure and warns them of the monster that protects it. The wordplay and repetition went right over our daughter's head, but it really appealed to all of the grown ups who were present at story time. We started reading this book to my son when he was four and he still likes it at age six, but probably not as much as I do! For example, the fiddler always has strings on him…but they aren’t as noticed until the end of the story.

Once they've set sail for the mysterious island, he tells them it is guarded by the terrible Pirate-Cruncher.They images are really quite dark which portrays the darness of a pirates life and the journey they are venturing on. A mysterious old pirate tells a tavern of salty seadogs about an island bursting with hidden treasure. and I was really amused to see all the signs that were so obvious during a second read but that I had missed the first time.

A hilarious picture book debut has a scurvy crew setting off for an island of gold, where an unexpected development awaits under the final flap. The first class, iconic illustrations are full of fantasy and the level of graphic detail makes them cool in a grown-up way.Partly written in verse, with suitable interjections from Purplebeard and his men, and wonderfully and quirkily illustrated by the author, it is a great read with plenty to view in the colourful illustrations. Great for deeper understanding of the story - discussion of puppet, hidden sea monster throughout book and many additional curricular activities can be linked to this book.

Jonny Duddle (Author, Illustrator) Jonny Duddle overheard the story of his first book The Pirate Cruncher while sailing on a square-rigger. Young readers get excited about their comprehension and try desperately to tell you what's going on, in case you missed it. But kids will know these foolish pirates are headed for trouble, and giggle as the crew’s worst fears come true. The first one I read in French (which is not my first language) so I didn't really get the benefit of all the wordplay. They set sail for treasure after speaking with a puppet, which unbeknownst to them was orchestrated by the sea monster himself and the whole thing is just an elaborate trap created by a sea monster to eat greedy pirates.
