About this deal
Beth can’t understand his sudden interest in the nature trail and whilst Alex is keeping an eye on things, she is concerned that he doesn’t want to be photographed. Alex never actively mingles with the neighbours, he steers clear of social media and, although not a loner, he does keep to himself. Candlish explores how well we really know those we love and what lengths we'll go to get what we want.

Although the evidence against Omar Evans, the school’s Black athletics trainer, was flimsy, he is currently serving a long prison sentence. Amazing he’d got away with it, when you thought about it, for he must have been obviously agitated when he rejoined her, but she was giggly, boozed up, all over him. While it did ratchet up the suspense in the sense that I REALLY wanted to get to the point and find out how if my predictions were correct (spoiler: they were) but I was waaaayyyy too tempted to skip ahead vs.I picked PART of the twist quite early and was feeling VERY smug about it- but the ending still got me. We’re in Rick’s head so we know he has the best of intentions but finds himself getting deeper and deeper in trouble nonetheless. You know, the more I think about it, the more I think how bloody criminal it’s been to keep it blocked off all these years.

Well, not really an old biddy, back then she’d probably only been about fifty, but to men in their twenties she’d seemed ancient. I live in a South London neighbourhood not unlike the one in my novels with my husband, teenage daughter, and our fox-red Labrador Bertie. He cares deeply for her and wants to help her find a way to help her escape the tyranny of Drew – even saving a fund for her new life.

PS: I never give trigger warnings, but you may get a laugh out of this one: I think I have a phobia of house guests that overstay their welcome, because there was a part in the book where I felt myself becoming very anxious, with sweating palms and a racing heart, and perhaps discovering some slightly murderous tendencies within my own heart towards one particular character. By that time I was well and truly into 'yeah, nah' mode and wondering if I was reading the same book as everyone else. A crime novel, domestic in its nature and deadly in its outcome, The Only Suspect has me salivating for more novels written by Louise Candlish, she has a skill that isn’t easily replicated. It was the weekend and he and Beth were at the kitchen table in their pyjamas, drinking coffee and scrolling through the news on their phones, when she exclaimed: ‘Yay, the council’s finally given the go-ahead for the trail! The twists keep on coming and coming especially towards the end and as per usual Louise Candlish has me perched on the edge of my seat, super glued to the dramatic events of the plot.
