The Jolly Postman follows an unnamed mail carrier as he delivers letters by bicycle to characters from traditional children's stories that are well known in Britain.Following each sheet of narrative verse and illustration, there is one shaped like an envelope and containing one of the postman's deliveries. As you go through the book another time, encourage students to use clues on the letters and envelopes to match the letters with their envelopes in the book. Such a simple idea of a postman delivering letter to various classic fairytale characters but with the added bonus of various surprises in each envelope. Alot of my classmates were incredibly enthusiastic about this book and were very fond of the memories they have of it. By including pages shaped as envelopes, Janet and Allan Ahlberg have added the element of curiosity to this book, as it instantly becomes interactive, enabling children to delve into the envelopes to retrieve each letter.

I loved this clever, beautifully illustrated story giving an insight into the correspondence of some well-known fairytale characters.I thought the letters were quite novel, and there was alot of humour in the pictures and the text that I could enjoy. Additionally, we also have some great 'The Jolly Postman' activities and games so that you can make your lesson interactive.
