About this deal

Like Louise O’Neill’s novels Only Ever Yours and Asking For It, it forces the reader to confront what feels unbearable – vulnerable female flesh, exposed to unceasing scrutiny, manipulation and mockery. Luckily for me, social media was just beginning to become the monstrous influence it is today and so I never really had to deal with the problems it has created for young people. I also liked Anna's moment at the end there as well as she stands up to the bullies, as others stand with her. i love that bates included a number of resources for people going through any of these issues as well as a list of conversation starters for a classroom situation.

The Burning by Laura Bates - Teen Librarian Toolbox Book Review: The Burning by Laura Bates - Teen Librarian Toolbox

Maybe it's end the story on a hopeful note, but I had various question marks over it - would Anna have actually have done that? She then begins to find out more and more about a girl who lived in the village hundreds of years ago who was accused of witchcraft. This was a novel that takes a look at the impact of peer pressure and social media on the lives of teenagers, especially girls.

this book was so important and i honestly think it should be taught in schools because of the issues it discusses. But Bates has done a brilliant job in creating backgrounds for most (if not all) of the main characters who are involved in Anna’s story, while keeping Anna’s own past slightly secretive. Bates, while not perfect, has done a very good job in writing a good modern-day story about the pervasiveness of sexism and misogyny in our society and especially in schools, and the titbits of fantasy throughout kept the story engaging and new. The Burning is going to be a great conversation starter, a way for people to face the truth of what's happening, but also how others, those in authority, react and try to deal with things. There's also a subplot about a witch hunt 500 years earlier which ties in to how women and girls are still treated today when it comes to their sexual selves.

The Burning by Laura Bates review – a tale of two witch-hunts

The author captures Anna's fear, shame and frustration as she is confronted with constant double standards. I knew what was coming, but I expected more from that last dream vision, and it fell a little flat for me.I really liked the honest portrait of young people and how they act and treat each other in a bad situation, and the horrible language often used. The Burning is an important, albeit brutal, book about sexism, double standards, sexual harassment, and online abuse that a lot of young girls go through while at school. But then rumors and whispers start, and Anna tries to ignore what is happening by immersing herself in learning about Maggie, a local woman accused of witchcraft in the seventeenth century. Growing up, Autumn and Finny were like peas in a pod despite their differences: Autumn is “quirky and odd,” while Finny is “sweet and shy and everyone like[s] him.

I really, really wanted to love this story, but there were a number of things that just left me wanting more, sadly. Online articles about the case and interview transcripts are provided throughout, and Pip’s capstone logs offer insights into her thought processes as new evidence and suspects arise. The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. She grew up in the London Borough of Hackney and Taunton, and has an older sister and a younger brother.
