Titles are; Our Man in Havana; Stamboul Train; A Gun for Sale; The Confidential Agent; The Ministry of Fear; The Third Man. First edition, second issue, with Quin Savory on page 78 and elsewhere; there are only a few known copies of the first issue. In Henry Green’s dreamy, modernist novel of 1939, Party Going, a group of rich young sybarites are checked at Victoria station in their attempt to connect with a sleeper train to the French Riviera. Our final passenger is Josef Grünlich, a professional thief, who had just murdered a man in Vienna in a failed burglary attempt and joins the train to escape justice.

Her brief moment of happiness with Myatt is when she thinks, “I have a life in people’s minds when I am not there to be seen or talked to’. The main protagonists are a Jewish businessman, Myatt, a chorus girl, Coral Musker, a Serbian Communist, a criminal, and a Lesbian journalist. He meets Coral Musker, who works as a vaudeville dancer and who is heading out to a job with Dunn’s Babies, also in Istanbul. The independent-minded quarterly magazine that combines good looks, good writing and a personal approach.

Blyton’s triumphal ginger-beer moment becomes the whisky-and-soda conclusion in a Pall Mall club or back in Haslemere. It would have been possible for a moment to believe that the sun was the expression of something that loved and suffered for men.

What Stamboul Train does have is superb writing, great characterisation, masses of atmosphere and beautiful descriptions. It was an interesting premise - a number of unconnected characters on the Orient Express from Ostend to Constantinople, whose story becomes connected - and the characters are interesting and built well. Stamboul Train / A gun for sale / The confidential agent / The ministry of fear / The third man / Our man in Havana. The first issue is indeed rarely seen as only few copies of the uncorrected text were circulated and even less survive today. Cast adrift from acting with either historical or generic functions, the characters move through the novel, enacting moments of experience that can’t be fully assimilated into the conventions of a thriller or a political novel or a whodunit. I was also a bit confused about the route of the train, as according to Wikipedia, the train never followed the route of the book: Ostend - Cologne - Vienna - Budapest - Belgrade - Constantinople.
