About this deal

Lack of water resistance aside, they’re near flawless, combining supreme comfort, beautifully expressive audio and the smartest, most effective noise cancelling going. Enjoy entertainment, connect with friends, get information, listen to music and notifications, set reminders, and more. However, it’s a double edged sword, as it’s almost too effective – if you decide to break into song and sing along with your tunes with the feature activated, it’ll pause your track, ending your karaoke session.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones

Enjoy a thrilling Dolby Atmos® experience and 360 Spatial Sound that adapts to your ears with BRAVIA XR and these headphones using wireless transmitter WLA-NS7. The outer part of the earcups act as a touch-capacitive control panel that can be used to play, pause or skip music, and raise or lower the volume. These headphones sport top-notch noise canceling, A+ battery, and mainly only trade the multipoint Bluetooth for the addition of aptX and aptX HD support. Super-low sounds below 100Hz are blocked out more through the WH-1000XM5, as are midrange and high-pitched frequencies. It’s an ingenious setup and design that separates it from the one-size-fits-all noise cancelling algorithm from other manufacturers.

As with their predecessors, they connect to your phone, tablet or laptop via Bluetooth, although they now operate over Bluetooth 5: a step up from Bluetooth 4. However, not everyone likes that kind of sound—especially podcast junkies and classical music enthusiasts. Their predecessors, the WH-1000XM3, have sat proudly atop many of our best headphones lists since their release in late 2018 and, despite numerous attempts, not one other set of cans has been able to usurp them as the kings of over-ear noise-cancelling headphones. The previous WH-1000XM3 is still one of our most recommended headphones, and Sony made it even better. For example, while listening to a podcast, the WH-1000XM4 pauses the media when I chuckle at a joke.

The fact that it remained the same in spite of adding a host of new features is actually kind of impressive. Though GPS requirements mean it won’t be able to work during a subterranean commute, you can preset your station or travel hub in the accompanying Headphones Connect app, and have it activate your preferred noise cancelling settings whilst above ground before descending. While aptX HD support would have been welcome, the Sony’s LDAC codec, present here, does a good job with devices that support it, pushing lots of detail through wirelessly.Depending on what you’re looking to do it might be worth it, but it’s not for me, as I spend most of my time using at least two devices. This rocks all the latest specs and Bluetooth codecs just like the WH-1000XM4, can use a USB-C cable as a wired connection, and it looks pretty great. It’s a complicated mix, but the WH-1000XM4 headphones do it justice, soaring with Buckley’s falsetto comfortably sitting at the fore.
