Sonos' CEO told us Beam does a lot of what Play:3 does but with smarts and TV, but what if you don't want a soundbar, compact as it might be?

The idea being that you can stick a speaker in every room and wirelessly play your digital music tracks on any or all of them at once. Whether listening to music, watching a movie, or playing a video game, you'll feel like you're in the center of the action - no other speakers needed. The usual Sonos qualities also continue to shine through, from excellent build, streaming from Spotify, Napster and internet radio, and brilliant format support – although we would like to see high-res studio masters included in a future update. It has Wi-Fi built-in, but if your connection to cables runs deep, there’s also an Ethernet port to connect directly. Sonos claims its software is more than happy to take on large libraries of around 65,000 tracks, and we found browsing through albums and artists wonderfully easy using the iOS app.

It's available in two colors – premium white gloss and premium black gloss – that can match either your Playbar or Play:5 speaker. There are subwoofers and then there’s the Sonos Sub. input to add a source, such as a turntable with a built-in phono stage – the beauty of it being that your vinyl could then be streamed across your network of connected Sonos speakers. If barking at your home speaker isn't important to you (there are no mics here, although you could control it with another mic-ed up Sonos speaker in your network) and superior streaming over Wi-Fi means Bluetooth streaming isn't high on your list either (there's also no Bluetooth) this is the model for you. If that foot print is still too large for your liking, this box is also designed to function just fine on its side, making it just 13cm wide.Whether you're building a surround sound setup or simply investing in a quality home speaker, Sonos deals are essential to keeping costs low while securing excellent audio. One sticking point here is that although the Five features AirPlay 2 support over Wi-Fi, there's no Google Cast baked in, which could be a stumbling block for Android households, particularly since Bluetooth isn't onboard either. C.'s Skinty Fia and you'll hear a low-end that, while impactful and unwavering, never bloats or muddies other musical passages such as accordions, drum riffs, angered vocals and keys. The Play:3 wants to disappear into your living room, not assault your eyeballs every time you enter it. While the dual drivers do start to sound a tiny bit strained at around 80 percent volume, they cope incredibly well, far exceeding our expectations. There are over 30 additional services you can plug into the Play:3 in the UK, including – Spotify, Apple Music, Last.That means you can hook it up to your receiver to send out your favorite CD over the airwaves in your home, or set it up with your old floor speakers to bring them into the 21st century. Excellent support regardless of tech knowledge Needless to say I don’t possess the greatest of tech knowledge but the staff in Exeter made me feel valued and supported. The user interface is entirely bespoke – you’re not transported to a separate menu system when you leap from Spotify to Naspter.
