About this deal

Yet as Sarah learned how to farm and grew closer to the land, she discovered a new generation on a path of regenerative change. A timely and optimistic book, ostensibly about why we need farming to produce food, but more deeply about how farming is done, or could be done. George Monbiot’s Regenesis takes as its subject no less than the entire world’s food production system and dares to imagine a world largely free of farming as we have known it. The highly-experienced authors cover a lot of interesting topics, including the potential of using ancient DNA to recreate extinct species, and even dry subjects are livened up with colourful stories of people and places.

This took them on a journey to farming and working the land part-time, during which they discovered or re-discovered farming life. I went on parental leave to have my two children and wrote my debut narrative non-fiction book, In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law published 2018 by Transworld ( Penguin Random House ). Thanks to this book I have a much greater appreciation for what farmers do for us and what a difficult time they have.

He also demonstrates a moving appreciation for the history of the landscape, and how the ancestors of its current owners shaped modern agriculture. The format works really well - she intersperses chapters describing her personal and familial journey into farming and the countryside with stories of individual farmers who face crises in their practices and make transitions into regenerative farming. With remarkable candour, Sarah describes eleven cases which reveal what goes on in our criminal and family courts: these are tales of domestic fall out, everyday burglary, sexual indiscretion, and children caught up in the law.

Common themes come through, but they all have different experiences and something new to teach Sarah (and us by extension) - and they're all trying various methods of farming that might be kinder to their pockets, but are especially often kinder to the wildlife that surrounds them. Now his son Charlie, my uncle, is considered a villain, blamed for ecological catastrophe and with a legacy no one wants. I'd not read much about it, and anticipated it being either really memoir based, or really technical, but it's a great combination of the two which works well.Sarah Langford is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law. They strike on several of the same solutions, including the “no-till” method of growing crops without ploughing, or the use of perennial grains. When Sarah Langford left her city life behind she found herself unexpectedly back in the world of farming - it was not how she remembered.
