About this deal

Nathalie Gracia-Cetto does a good job delivering what is essentially a masculine rose amber and patchouli fragrance, something usually the provenance of the Middle East, in a context that is both more approachable (by virtue of the designer space), and easier to wear. The base notes of amber, musk, tonka bean, cedar, vanilla and oakmoss give the cologne its warm, woody foundation and powdery finish. The woody notes of course, which structure the whole composition… It’s deep, thrilling and hot to the touch. I think Moustache Eau de Parfum reads pretty unisex too, since it has that right balance of sweet, aromatic, floral, and richness everyone seems to like. It's so impressive when a fragrance keeps enchanting you more and more as you get to know it through multiple wears.

Moustache Eau de Parfum by Rochas– Basenotes

The embodiment of a man who is a free spirit, but refined, the kind you might meet on a Parisian street. The cologne is presented in a whimsical spray bottle that pays homage to the style and design of the 1940s. Tonka and the expected woody-amber riff attributed to something like Amber Xtreme or Ambermax are here, giving a fuzzy nondescript woodiness that drives the vintage gatekeepers and doomsday-prep hoarders something to shake their fist and scream at clouds about; but here I find the material handled deftly and blended well with the rest. Tuxedo is still more refined and has better quality, but it is barely distinguishable to an average nose. Patchouli brings the camphoric accent of its damp roots, emphasized by Oriental Benzoin and Vanilla. Mandarin and Pink Berries sketch a fruity, spicy and intriguing line… Both a cheeky nod and a promise, it is spirited, enticing and exhilarating.

Rochas Moustache EDP: Better than YSL Tuxedo? [Review] Rochas Moustache EDP: Better than YSL Tuxedo? [Review]

Whichever you choose, rest assured knowing that Rochas Moustache EDP is one of the best value scents on the market right now. With moderate sillage and longevity, it takes the wearer from daytime to evening occasions with confidence. Change the name and bottle, and you have a perfectly nice scent—warm, smooth, and passably naturalistic as modern woody ambers go. Overall, the mandarin and pink pepper notes do a lot of shouting at first, with the rose sort of sneaking up behind in a bed of benzoin, vanilla, and cedar. A fresh, spicy and aromatic scent, it’s beloved by men of all ages for its classic and casual character.

Looking at the review score this should be 100% positive currently since the only neutrals are due to to simply being confused between the retro-citrus EDT which this isn't and it deserves to be reviewed on it's own merits. Since I own both scents I’m going to give you my honest thoughts on Moustache and how it shapes up to Tuxedo. To complement the revival, a second fragrance was created by Natalie Gracia-Netto for all those who depending on the time or their mood, would like to expand their collection of fragrances to express a wide range of feelings and explore a new olfactory palette. If you're looking for more of an alternate take on that stuff, you'll need to track down the "Original 1949" re-issue that smells more like if Moustache was made in the 1970's than in the 1940's, showing a greater focus on green notes than musk or sandalwood. To complement thE revival, a second fragrance was created by Natalie Gracia-Netto for all those who depending on the time or their mood, would like to expand their collection of fragrances to express a wide range of feelings and explore a new olfactory palette. My wife said it smells like a tailored suit in a bottle but without a tie and since then it’s been a staple for me. For me, this scent had a bit of a weird start, as my cognitive dissonance on this being in a bottle shared by one of my all-time favorite perfumes really put me on the defensive. In conclusion, although Rochas Mosutache EDP isn’t necessarily better than Tuxedo, it IS a solid fragrance in its own right. Usually, rose nuances would be in a feminine perfume, but it creates a comforting aroma in this case. Top notes are Pink Pepper and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are Atlas Cedar and Bulgarian Rose; base notes are Benzoin, Vanilla and Patchouli.

Many people in the fragrance community have noted that Moustache EDP has several similarities to YSL Tuxedo.I do get the disappointment here, as this is just another woody-amber perfume, albeit one with a rose twist that hearkens back to things like the rose-amber-civet JHL by Aramis (1982), one of my absolute favorites by the way. I'd go so far as to say if you enjoy JHL, this is a "modern" take on the style that won't absolutely break the bank, just don't expect there to be any animalic funk in here like there is in that old war dog. I had been eyeing this one for awhile and broke my armistice on new bottles to pick Moustache EDP up and am so glad I did. Although I do believe you can wear this comfortably with a suit/tie/blazer, you can pull it off in casual situations too – especially if you’re a stylish man. I haven't worn it to work yet but I presume it fades down before mid-shift but hopefully sticks around enough to still provide pleasant wafts throughout the day.
