About this deal

The final edition of Brexitcast was released on 1 February 2020, with the first edition of Newscast airing on 6 February. Rob Burley (born 1969) is an English television producer, formerly the BBC's editor of live political programmes. The former chancellor faced a three-month investigation by a press regulator for making precisely this claim. He had his new BBC Wednesday evening political show established – a longform interview – which they then axed and instead offered him some sort of unfixed, occasional slot. Burley said he had "zero shame" about the episode and that they had "invited people and they said yes and then we realised our best line-up was all female".

Rob Burley’s deliciously irreverent insider’s account of a career spent trying to get straight answers from politicians offers a unique insight into the British political class and their complicated relationship with the truth. my slightly sweary part-history, part-memoir chronicling the televised 60-year tussle between broadcasters and politicians. Editorial director Joel Simons won the UK andCommonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Martin Redfern at Northbank Talent Management. I was thinking about this when reading a new book about politics and lies by Rob Burley, a long-serving BBC editor. But given what happened to him, it may be quite a while before anyone makes a television documentary asking the question again. It would be tragic if, as the digital world opens ever-more possibilities, the opinion corridor ends up narrower than ever. It has been a Sisyphean task: a University of York study identified 35 ways politicians evade questions – 36 if you include Boris Johnson hiding in a fridge – and interviewees know them all. The role was based in Westminster and led Burley to take responsibility for the programmes Daily Politics, Sunday Politics, This Week, The Westminster Hour and Newswatch. And with Owen Paterson saga and the recent Downing Street Christmas Party mess ringing in our ears, it feels like the perfect time to ask the question famously first posed by Jeremy Paxman: 'Why is this lying bastard lying to me? From Thatcher to Johnson, with Corbyn and Cameron in between, Burley "explores the state of democracy and accountability in a post-truth era, where voters now expect dishonesty from their leaders".

Had Attenborough said that more people die each year from cold than from heat, he’d face outcry and a full Nigel Lawson-style inquisition. There were lots of other reasons why he was valuable too, of course, but this one was particular to him.I’ve spent more than 25 years behind the camera, so it felt weird to find myself sitting on Good Morning Britain’s big glossy set with Susanna Reid and Adil Ray. During my weeks of promo I’ve kept in touch with my colleague Beth Rigby, Sky News’s political editor.
