Racing the Light is a relatively straightforward mystery, beautifully honed and cleverly disguised to keep us guessing. This is crime writing at its absolute level best, a smooth and scintillating seminal triumph of both form and function. As Elvis makes inquiries and follows up leads, he runs into porn stars, conspiracy theorists, retired black ops weapons designers, Chinese thugs, crooked city councilmen, bent real estate developers and a homeless man living in Griffith Park. When she hires Elvis to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government. Author Daniel Sweren-Becker must have been well tuned in to the zeitgeist when he conceived Kill Show, his newly published ‘true crime’ novel, as it delves into growing critiques of the genre. The race starts at the bottom of the slipway on Coastguards Beach, and finishes with a mighty uphill climb to the SchoolhouseDevon restaurant, high above the water. Finding Josh should be simple, but Elvis quickly learns he isn't alone in the hunt—a deadly team of mysterious strangers are determined to find Josh and his adult film star girlfriend first.A whirlwind of action, fisticuffs, and stray bullets, along with Crais’ usual dose of heart and humor, make for a riveting and satisfying read. Cole and Pike have become firm favourites with lovers of American PI fiction and Racing the Light is their 19th outing. Cole can’t help getting in deep but the beauty is Pike is the man you want to turn to in a tight corner. It comes to life thanks to an intriguing and colourful cast of characters, fizzy dialogue and a strong dose of humour, particularly Cole’s wry view of life. When she hires Elvis to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government conspiracies, and a squad of professional bodyguards.

Big Island, LA connects the dots between a heist gone wrong at a police shooting range and corporate greed and political corruption, leaving a former combat marine and an agoraphobic crime reporter to sort out the mystery. Elvis continues to be a great protagonist, with so much understated humor, compassion, and integrity. All round this is starting to sound like a very weird family because Adele’s theory is that the US government is behind Josh’s disappearance and the answers are to be found in the Nevada Desert. Written with the heart, humour, and relentless suspense for which Crais is famous, Racing the Light delivers Elvis Cole’s most dangerous case yet.

In the mid 80s, Crais created a series of crime novels based around the characters Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. With all the humor and fast-moving suspense that Crais fans desire, Racing the Light reunites, Cole, Joe Pike, and Jon Stone. Tough, funny and hugely entertaining – superbly crafted crime fiction in the best traditions of the PI novel. If you want to understand why Robert Crais is considered a modern master of crime fiction, crack this book open now.

The Louisiana-born author Robert Crais began his career working on what are now considered iconic 80s crime shows – Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, LA Law and more. For a different take on California there’s always Michael Connelly’s The Dark Hours or a slightly darker vision of LA in A Man Named Doll by Jonathan Ames. When shehires Elvis to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government conspiracies, and a squad of professional bodyguards. For Tinsel Munroe, hosting a late night radio show in Melbourne isn’t just a stepping stone toward a more successful career but something of a labour of love. My only gripe is the POV switching, which seems to slow the book down and doesn't necessarily seem worth it (some of those voices are much less authentic than Cole's), but overall, a great book.
