They couldn't easily be slotted into a micro-section of a branch of a sub-genre of a genre that some smart Alec had dreamed up. Out went producer Steve Albini, who’d recorded Surfer Rosa in 10 days, occasionally in the studio toilet; in came Gil Norton, who’d worked with Echo and the Bunnymen and Del Amitri. Bands such as Husker Du, Sonic Youth and Fugazi piqued my interest and part of this scene were The Pixies. You could tell from the tracklisting that their notion of a lunge for mainstream acceptance didn’t involve toning down Francis’s obsession with violence: Gouge Away, Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed. The one I like is labeled 'UK Surf'; I’d be interested to hear other Club member opinions comparing the two.

John Davidson: I'm generally a sucker for a great bass riff and there's plenty of chunky baselines in The Pixies songs to get my teeth into, but I'm not really blown away by the discordant garage vibes.I'm really just joking around here, so people don't need to take any of these comments too seriously.

The production value on this pressing is outstanding - the sound is full and well balanced across all instruments and there is literally ZERO surface noise on my copy…and I haven’t even given it an ultrasonic bath yet.My original, which I assume is the US pressing, has a greenish label for the Doolittle album proper, while the new one I found has a more bronze-colored label, and the entire gatefold is built slightly thicker. The previous album’s biggest hit had been Gigantic, a song on which Mrs John Murphy, or Kim Deal as she was later known, spent four minutes admiring the size of an African-American man’s penis.
