About this deal

Faithfully based on a true story and could be read alongside the recent Through my Eyes series about children living in war zones. She’s the recipient of multiple arts grants, a Premier’s Reading Challenge Ambassador, and a former literary festival board member. I think it would be difficult to get onto the curriculum, but at the same time, it would be so valuable as a resource. Although designed to appeal to kids, this fun-filled craft book will also delight any adult interested in aerodynamics.

Paper Planes is the story of a 12 year old boy, Dylan Weber, who discovers he has a gift for making and flying paper planes and manages to achieve his dreams despite living in relative poverty in an Australian country town with his father who is suffering from depression. Our Little Secret (Scholastic) was listed for the Golden Inkys and has recently been republished by Ligature Press.I figured it was better to let my children continue watching so they would know everything rather than worry about what they didn't know. The paper planes he makes and how he has to adjust them if necessary are rather a good metaphor for other things kids need to deal with in life and how they must adjust in different situations.

Kevin, Dylan’s best friend, is very funny because one morning it was early and Kevin wakes up Dylan just to help him prepare for the championship in Sydney. This book is filled with creative projects that make the paper-airplane experience a little more quirky. Our main gripe is that all the planes are the same, so this is not the best product for those hoping to learn new folds.

The normal town life that he and his parents and 2 older siblings (Jarko and Danijela) shared, is now obliterated by Serbian shelling into Sarajevo, resulting in the terrible siege of 1992-1996.

What did break my heart was the line about Australia accepting refugees, and I reflect on the current state of play that has the main parties detaining refugee children for years. I think it would be a good book for younger readers, as long as they can handle the issues faced by people during wars.

They will learn how to design their own planes, do stunts, and build a 3-D airport with stuff found around the house, and they'll discover that the largest aircraft ever flown wasn't a plane at all. Although the tone is light hearted and fun, the book does delve into a few issues such as schoolyard bullying and the best way to handle it, ultra-competitiveness, the thrill of a first crush as well as grief and how had it can be to go on. There are 16 models and 76 full-color planes in all, a full-color poster of an airport, a pilot's license and flight log, and a field guide to common aircraft. Collins, holder of the world record for paper-airplane distance, it shows you how to make 22 distinct airplane designs, with convenient tear-out pages and step-by-step illustrated instructions.

I also vaguely expected that this novel would be a dystopian, in line with the other novels Scholastic had sent me in the package – imagine my surprise! Paper Planes (Scholastic) was a 2016 Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Notable/shortlisted for the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. It’s the classic, world’s bestselling paper airplane book, grounded in the aerodynamics of paper and abounding with fun.And at the back of the book there are instructions on how to make a paper plane, which includes information on measuring angles and gravity. Paper planes is the book that has started me to read more and enjoy reading just for fun and not being told to read. Webster's voice is incredibly powerful as she tells this fictionalised account of real events in a childlike voice. Niko and his friend Nadim take refuge from the bombing in the stairwell of their apartment building and together they find hope in the midst of a war they did not start but must try to survive. From gliders to darts, these lightweight soarers have been around for millennia, captivating not only children but also adults from Leonardo da Vinci to Jack Northrop, the cofounder of Lockheed Corporation.
