When there is a change, we need to recognize it and be part of it instead of resisting it and stay forever in a morass. Fred and Alice visit the Leadership Council with their concerns, but the Council balks and wants merely to start a committee to investigate. Never have I read a parable in a business book that took a complex issue like change management and distilled it down into a simple story for all to understand. Then they put some sub-headings and explanations to make theirs appear different when put side by side with those of Johnson’s. The book accurately "types" people in a creative way, and subtly offers real tips for persuading large groups of people.
All the things that they had to go through to overcome this challenge, and all the steps that they went through to succeed. I think the book was intended to help us adapt to change but I don't really see a parallel between the fabricated and factually flawed fable of penguins on a melting iceberg and what we are facing at work. We all want to contribute and be seen as a visionary leader, a capable manager and/or a valuable team player. Most of the denizens of the Antarctic penguin colony sneer at Fred, the quiet but observant scout who detects worrying signs that their home, an iceberg, is melting. On the surface they read like the stories of our childhood employing simple vocabulary to describe everyday contexts to which we can all relate.
