About this deal

We shoot both images using the default JPEG settings and manual white balance of our test bodies, so the images should be quite consistent from lens to lens. On the one hand it is extremely versatile thanks to its 18-36mm equivalent focal length range, and its small size and low weight make it extremely portable.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f4-5.6 Lens - Wex Photo Video

I think it's a shame this is the one zoom in their whole lineup that Oly never updated with some sealing or at least to match the look of all their other current stuff. If you need 7mm on a Micro Four Thirds body, the Panasonic 17-14mm f/4 is the only way to get there—end of story. Although there is a dedicated lens hood for the Olympus lens (the square-cut LH-55B), it must be bought separately. Teleconverter MC-14 –which means that you can extend the maximum focal length to an enormous 1600mm if you want or need to.If you are reading this comparison, the aspect that most likely concerns you is the difference in optical quality between the two lenses. The lens features an extremely compact and lightweight design for a wideangle zoom, realising one of the benefits promised by Olympus for the Four Thirds system on its launch. EX DC HSM, which at the time of writing is rather cheaper and features ultrasonic-type focusing, but loses at the wide end where every millimetre of focal length counts (9mm offers an extra 5 degrees angle of view over 10mm). The good news is that the performance remains excellent at this value with sharpness peaking at around f/5. the depth of field is extremely shallow and it's easy to blur backgrounds in portraits – and this lens has been designed to produce super-smooth bokeh too.

Olympus 9-18, but: Micro Four Thirds Had decided on the Olympus 9-18, but: Micro Four Thirds

The ring uses a ''fly-by-wire'' system to achieve manual focus results, and the E-P1 provides some interesting manual focus functionality. Both the focusing and zoom ring offer a decent amount of grip thanks to their slightly knurled surfaces. Chromatic aberration visible at 100% cropping, which you can easily correct afterwards, is the only disadvantage when you evaluate it’s optical performance. In the case of both lenses, the number of turns required to travel from infinity to the minimum focus distance depends on how quickly or slowly you turn the ring. If you want a bag that doesn't look like a camera bag or prefer to make your own DIY solutions, they're worth a look. The "best Olympus lenses" (OM System, as the range will gradually be renamed) are ideal for Olympus / OM system camera users. version) should be compatible with the PEN series of camera, and while we've tested it, you'll have to use your imagination on our test graph to compare its performance with the Olympus 9-18mm. Occasionally flare can add a fun look to a shot, but with this lens you're likely to get that effect more often than you'd like. maximum aperture and controllable background blur for everything from wildlife to wedding portraits. In this position, it cannot be used to take pictures, but all you need to do is grab the zoom ring and rotate it to the 9mm mark.

Olympus 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED M.Zuiko Digital (M43) Review Olympus 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED M.Zuiko Digital (M43)

ZUIKO Digital lens, the correction is highly successful, with only a minimum of "residual" barrel distortion seen in photos taken at a focal length of 9mm. Getting a pleasant bokeh out of a wide angle zoom is anything but a walk in the park, especially when the lens in question lacks a fast constant aperture, but it is possible to achieve some interesting results by taking advantage of the closest focus distance and finding a nice background. One of the best pancake lenses, when fitted to something like the Olympus PEN E-P7 you can slide your camera into a jacket pocket or a handbag and take it anywhere. There's a bunch of people commenting on the 9-18 without having owned it or even referencing the actual review that gives them the impression they suggest. Zuiko 9-18mm over its main competitor, the Lumix G 7-14mm, is probably the size and weight advantage the former has over the latter. It's not surprising to see a fairly high level of distortion in this wide angle lens, though the distortion is consistently barrel-shaped and easily correctable in post-processing software. Sure, it's a little less sharp at the extreme edges of the frame, it suffers from a variable aperture, and it doesn't include a hood. This compact, lightweight ultra-wideangle zoom is aimed at the more budget-conscious Four Thirds user, belonging as it does to the company's 'Standard' line of lenses. At the 18mm end, the angle of view is 62°, which is the same as that of a 36mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera. Olympus Zuiko 9-18mm f/4-5.6 ED Interchangeable Lens Review

Usually Micro Four Thirds bodies correct for vignetting (along with distortion and in some cases CA) in the JPEG conversion process, but it appears that the falloff this lens produces is too extreme to be fully corrected in software. With a lens this small, zoom creep is not a factor; there is a zoom lock switch, but it doesn't operate as you'd expect, locking the zoom into a storage state. The center is decently sharp at all focal lengths and apertures (until diffraction kicks in, that is), but the corners only really sharpen up when zooming all the way in and stopping down to at least f/8. Is the (relatively) larger, faster, more expensive lens the better choice to the small, lightweight, lens? With the more compact build of MFT cameras and lenses, the actual working distance between the front of the lens and the subject remains entirely usable, at about 10cm.
