In 1830, Goncharov decided to quit the college and in 1831 (having missed one year because of a cholera outbreak in Moscow) he enrolled in Moscow State University's Philology Faculty to study literature, arts, and architecture. Aduev, Oblomov, and Raysky (the protagonist of The Precipce) therefore form "but one personality in its successive rebirths. Dobrolyubov, a follower of Vissarion Belinsky and a leading literary critic, believed strongly that literature should promote positive change, and his essay praised Oblomov as an effective warning against the Russian social disease of "Oblomovism".

The character that would become Oblomov originally appeared in 1838 in the Maikovs' handwritten magazine written by Goncharov, as one of the protagonists in "Likhaia bolest". Ivan Goncharov worked on Oblomov for about ten years, from the late 1840s until 1858, but a reader is left with the impression that the hero was born to him in a single vision, and that the five-hundred-plus pages of the book are an attempt at novelistic elaboration of what is essentially one idea: What if a man were so indolent that he could do nothing? Stoltz introduces new infrastructure and education for the peasants at Oblomovka, and revitalizes its profits. Clocks moved slower; weeks dragged; months crawled under the vast Russian skies and across the endless steppes. He casts Oblomov’s condition as a comic one: our hero favors very short-term pleasures over long-term ones—he exchanges the pleasures of companionable society for the pleasure of not having to bother to put on his boots.
