I've made one of the recipes (it hasn't been all that cold yet and these foods are definitely for warming a body on dark, chilly days) and while it wasn't perfect, I could tell exactly what I would need to do to make it to my liking. I could read Nigel Slater's books all day, and when I go this book, in July it came to work with me for a week. If I have yoghurt, blackcurrant compote and pumpkin seeds at breakfast, it will be in that little book.

Likewise, a lunch of green lentils and grilled red peppers, or a dinner of roast cauliflower and a bowl of miso soup. Instead, he's simply providing options and ideas, based on what he himself would like to eat for dinner.

Slater's recipes are never not intuitive and, mostly, the ingredients lists are mercifully short – the same goes for Greenfeast. The simple act of making someone something to eat, even a bowl of soup or a loaf of bread, has a many-layered meaning. Toast was published in Britain in October 2004 and became a bestseller after it was featured on the Richard and Judy Book Club.This is such a pretty book to look through, this is a cookery book you could just look through for pleasure. A few have been crushed to a purée and served as a fool – the best being those caramelised with sugar and cloves, then folded into whipped cream and proper custard. As suggested, I added some cooked pasta, which made for a satisfying meal - great flavor with the smoked mozzarella and sprouts; I only added half the cream, which was still plenty. Wash the rice in warm water, drain, then put it in a small, deep pan, cover with 300ml of cold water and soak for 30 minutes.
