About this deal

The Modern Witch Tarot is a new look at an old classic, it's fun without being feckless, cool without being shallow, and special without being precious. The Minor Arcana is divided into four suits – Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, with 10 number cards and 4 Court cards. My father, a reform rabbi, and my mother, from the Jewish community in Mexico City, both encouraged my obsession with the spiritual from a young age. I love that fact that Lisa tackles the ‘isms’ (sexism, ageism, racism and so on) head-on by giving tradition a little twist and I adore her artwork within this deck as the key symbolism still remains.

Black velvet tarot bag with Modern Witch Emblem embroidered in gold (also included with Standard Edition). This style of artwork is unforgiving when it comes to printing mistakes making the quality control here all the more impressive. This passed down to Parra and her mother, who incorporate their own magical rituals and practices into their day-to-day lives. Being a Satanist in Mexico, however, is still taboo, since many people around the world have misconceptions about what the practice entails. While witchcraft is a relatively prominent part of the culture of the US, and steeped into the energy of Mexico, it takes a different tone in Japan, where the majority of the population is polytheist.

In terms of the images on the cards themselves, the graphics are clear and bright, and the images are great. It has inclusive and diverse illustrations of all kinds of women, femmes, and the gender fluid, wearing modern fashion and up-to-date styles, yet keeps the flavour of the Rider-Waite imagery.

Having seen quite a few walkthrough videos of The Modern Witch Tarot, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on this deck for quite some time and so as you can imagine, I was elated when Liminal 11 agreed to offer me a copy of this delightfully diverse and divine deck in exchange for a review. And this deck definitely celebrates strong people of many different kinds, including LGBTQ, plus-size, and older people. Based between Tokyo and Los Angeles, her work dissects the differences between the two cultures and the fusion of feminism and witchcraft in the US. While the depictions of technology may put some readers off, I really like how it reflects the kind of witches and Tarot readers that exist in the world right now.
