The only other thing that seemed almost reasonable was Wii Play, released in 2006 in Japan, with its Laser Hockey. To play air hockey, you just place the bridge in the centre and add the goal ends, select your side, grab your paddle and try to knock the pucks into your opponent’s goal on the other end – the first to score 15 goals is the winner. Whilst 15 seems a big number to be keeping track of during the excitement of play, there is a handy scoring system built right on to the table – there is a slider on each side so that you can keep track of your own score – if would be better if the numbers where of a different colour than that of the white of the game frame, so that they are easier to read. Game play is simple, turn on the air, hit and block pucks, thrusting them back towards your opponent’s goal. As of right now, I haven't actually been able to find a video with someone being scored on, however, so I can't actually say if the opponent jumps up and down.

You remove the centre bridge pieces, change the goal for a piece that holds targets and you can play Target Strike. The fansub that I watched mentioned "video game" and certainly doesn't mention "Mario" (possible trademark issue), but it's a bit hard to hear the original Japanese dialog layered with another inner dialog. It seems unlikely it would be an actual air hockey table, since Shimamura says it's something she has, but I've seen miniature air hockey games, and I even found a Mario one (not sure when it was made , but this one probably doesn't match with the book's timeline of being published in 2013). It is very quick to set up, and it is very minimal (first play requires you to decorate the game with the stickers supplied).

We loved Super Mario Air Hockey, it is good fun for all players regardless of age and young can play against older age groups with no real disadvantage. However, considering the expression on her face, and that she taps the mallet against her head, the point may just be that she is being dumb.

Additionally, IGN supposedly said this game is " a dull, awkwardly controlling air hockey game", so there's no way Shimamura would get any actual air hockey XP out of this (though notably, the link on Wikipedia goes to the review for the Table Tennis version of this game, and I can't find this actual quote). But the Italian plumber and his fraternal twin brother Luigi have left Mushroom Kingdom and ventured out into games that don’t require a screen with games such as Super Mario Air Hockey – an exciting tabletop air hockey game suitable for 1, 2 or 4 players aged 4+ with a playing time of 10-20 minutes. That reference really is a bit hard to get IMO; maybe it was a hit for the author, who thought the toy would catch on more than it actually did.
