The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation puts this head-to-head battle at its heart in a straightforward but deeply strategic two-player game. It is still in production by Hasbro with numerous editions and variants with popular media themes and different rules, including PC software versions, video games, and mobile apps. You get the hang of the strategy of the game after only a few plays, and because it builds off of a fairly popular game, it is easier to teach new players how to play than most other war games. The 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition contained the same troop pieces but made of metal rather than plastic.

Risk was invented by French film director Albert Lamorisse and originally released in 1957 as La Conquête du Monde ( The Conquest of the World) in France. This is because Fellowship’s path to Mount Doom is purely a time limit – it serves no other function.
If you have conquered at least one territory, you may take one (only one) Territory card from the top of the deck and add it to your hand. One of these cards is awarded to a player at the end of each turn if the player has successfully conquered at least one territory during that turn. As the Ring progresses closer to Mount Doom, the regions where the Ring has been are no longer as important and the regions where it will be (especially Mordor) will become the most important areas of the game. One of the key differences in this regard is that in LotRR, there are 9 different regions; in regular Risk there are only 6. When moving your Leader, make sure it does not end its move in the same territory as your second Leader. The Lord of the Rings is less thematic than some of the other Lord of the Rings games on this list, but it’s no lesser as a result. Like rewatching the Extended Trilogy, War of the Ring isn’t short - expect to spend at least a handful of hours playing, and longer if you’re new - but it’s worth the time and effort it demands. Although the iPad version ( Risk HD) has to be bought separately from the iPhone version ( Risk), local link up allows games to take place across versions. At the end of the last turn, players count up all their points based on the territories (1 point each), strongholds (2 extra points each) and regions they control (2-7 points based on the Region Bonus), as well as what cards they have played during game. When attacking, a battle may continue until the attacker decides to stop attacking, the attacker has no more armies with which to attack, or the defender has lost their last army at the defending territory, at which point the attacker takes over the territory by moving armies onto it and draws a territory card for that turn. If by drawing a new Adventure card your hand of cards goes over four, you must discard back down to four. What’s more, it can even be played as a prequel to War of the Ring, with the outcome of the game affecting the setup for the epic conclusion of the Fellowship’s journey.
