About this deal

The latter not only survived the Holocaust but, after the deaths of her mother, brother, and sister in Auschwitz-Birkenau, like a brave warrior, rebuilt her life and shared her tale with all of humanity with the message of love, not hate. On 31 January 2023, in an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, she received the award from King Charles III.

At the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, there is a plaque that reads, ‘For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews, from various countries of Europe’. For our generation, we can hope for a utopian future - a world in which we learn from atrocities, where hatred and racism no longer exist. Keeping this in mind, Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert shared her ordeal with the world and people alike in her book, Lily’s Promise. When Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert BEM published her book in 2021, it became an instant Sunday Times Bestseller, widely celebrated as an incredibly powerful account of her story. Ebert's great grandson Dov Forman received the Points of Light award from the UK Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, in November 2021, in recognition of exceptional services to Holocaust education. In 1953 Ebert was reunited with her other brother, who had also survived the Nazi camp and slave-labour system. An act of such kindness serves as a reminder that life is simply a series of moments - that a single act might mean more to someone than we could ever know.

And I want to change this, and books are a weapon which is helping me, so that I can help others and my nation. The Nazis invaded Hungary in March 1944, and, in July 1944, when Ebert was 20 years old, she along with her mother, younger brother and three sisters were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Also in 2021, Ebert and Forman used the TikTok video sharing platform, gaining more than a million followers for clips in which Ebert answers people's questions about surviving the Holocaust, when she was a prisoner at Auschwitz concentration camp. The commissioner praised Mrs Ebert for her decades-long engagement as a witness to the Holocaust and her recent turn to TikTok, a platform on which she and her great-grandson Dov Forman have amassed over 1.Lily tracks the occasions on which simple moments of kindness from strangers enabled her to cultivate her sense of hope. When the portraits were released in the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace Ebert told Charles "Meeting you, it is for everyone who lost their lives. They allow him the necessary space that he needs for himself because they are not shoving him up against the wall.
