About this deal

Lila and the Secret of Rain: the perfect book to teach about different cultures and contrasting localities in KS1 with related worksheets, activities and display materials. His first picture book The Most Important Gift of All illustrated by Karin Littlewood, was nominated for The Kate Greenaway Medal in 2006. Your class will read through the sentences and highlight words that are homophones or they can choose the homophone that completes the sentences. It was a nice depiction of an African culture and would be a great integration to many different lessons. David's most recent picture book The Great Nursery Rhyme Disaster was chosen as one of the children's books of the year 2008 by Nicolette Jones of The Sunday Times and has been shortlisted for the 2009 Sheffield Children's Book Award.

Its about bravery, courage and hope, narrated beautifully through expressive illustrations by Jude Daly. I love the illustration style, somehow the intensity of the sun, comparison of the scale of human and the nature and the hope of the rain, is wonderfully conveyed through the beautiful watercolors. Your class must include capital letters for: the beginning of sentences, opening speech and proper nouns. Really enjoyed how the stories Lila found to be the saddest stories she knew but when she was honest and told of how she was suffering under the sun, then the rain came… Good to partner with a few other rain related books! In this activity, we look at how Lila tries (and succeeds) at persuading the sky to stop the sun from shining and start the rain. Also, for older students, the placement of symbols, like the sun and later the dark clouds, within the illustrations would prove interesting for analysis. I think reading this book will support discussion of cultural similarities and differences, as well as geographical impacts on a society. You can also allow your class to reflect more on persuasive writing and think about how Lila persuaded the sky in the story and the reasons for it. Lila and the secret of Rain - Teaching Slides is a PowerPoint presentation which contains a range of task modelling, group activities and teaching and learning opportunities that teachers can use as they explore the focus text in this English unit from Focus Education.

This book book poses so many questions to it's younger audience about Kenya, the water cycle, Lila's actions and not giving in on something you may be wishing for. Lila is so worried that when her grandfather whispers to her the secret of making the rain fall, she decides to do something about it — even if it means confronting the sky itself. In desperation, she seeks her grandfather's wisdom about the secret of rain and then leaves her village to try and accomplish the impossible. I loved this story because it highlighted a young person who does something difficult and brave for others, rather than just thinking of herself.David Conway is a children's picture book author who has written for Hodder, Random House, Frances Lincoln and Gullane Children's Books. Your class can read through and tick the statements to see if it was used successfully to persuade the sky. This can also be used to talk about natural resources and how different cultures rely on it and how they use it. Would it be possible to have both a cursive and pre-cursive with the lead ins and outs version made available please?
