About this deal

Peter James From the bestselling author of What You Did comes the story of a young couple who are about to discover that in a house full of secrets there’s nowhere to hide… For Helen and George, the remote fixer-upper in Cornwall was supposed to be a dream home, and a way to leave behind the problems they’re both running from. Yes, because doctors frequently fall head over heels for underemployed wannabe hipster freelance journalists, at least, provided they’re chubby, suffering from severe chronic depression, and don’t like cooking or doing anything useful around the house. All in all, the author, Claire McGowan has an excellent ability to ensure the characters are all rounded and exceedingly complex as well.

There are plenty of tense moments in the book that kept me on my toes, and I loved that we had 3 main viewpoints here. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. According to McGowan, her first novel, The Fall was completely a surprise to her because when penning it down, she completely had no idea that she was working on a crime fiction novel. Peter JamesFrom the bestselling author of What You Did comes the story of a young couple who are about to discover that in a house full of secrets theres nowhere to hideFor Helen and George, the remote fixer-upper in Cornwall was supposed to be a dream home, and a way to leave behind the problems theyre both running from.Despite the fact that Dead Ground can be read as a standalone novel, the reader can get so much more from this book by reading the previous installment. The combination of a creepy house and elements of witchcraft makes for a thrilling premise in this book. Helen and George separately begin investigating the house's previous owners, and as construction accidents take a near deadly turn, and secrets start to become revealed, the couple realizes they are in terrible danger, and they can’t trust anyone—not even each other. I even stayed up until the early hours of the morning, despite having to get up early for work the next day.

There’s plenty of spooky atmosphere with a crumbling old house waaaay out in the hinterlands and with witches referenced constantly, but I think you’d be better off just listening to a Halloween playlist if you love spooky ambiance. So, I saw Let Me In, literally break bookstagram this week and of course I didn’t want to feel left out so I requested it on Netgalley . Until the reader is in too deep in the story, is when the author decides to reveal the backstory to the protagonist. Paula is sent to her hometown of Northern Ireland so that she can work on a case, which involved several missing girls.

A husband and wife lie to each other not only about who they are, but the twisted way their families are intertwined. At one point, there's a gigantic hole in their kitchen wall, but George can't be fked to do anything about it. Sometimes I've written an entire short story because something I saw or read or just thought of sparked an idea for a title, and the story flowed from there. The spooky house, witchy vibes and literally every single character in this book is hiding something. When a horrific accident almost ends in tragedy, Helen worries that the houses secrets are to blame, and as events spiral out of control she discovers George has been lying to her. After Covid and having a stressful career as a doctor, Helen and George decide to leave London and move to a remote fixer upper house in the countryside of Cornwall. Her short story ‘Archaeology’ was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2015 and her story ‘Rosie Grant’s Finger’ appeared in the anthology Belfast Noir, as well as ‘The Last Resort’ in the CWA anthology Deadly Pleasures. Cue the little magic ding ding in my inbox and I see my big ole eyes get wide as I stare at my approval !
