That’s still a dual-core, dual-thread chip, which has an impact on performance – and benchmark results – but we didn’t experience any painful pauses or slowdowns during testing.

Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year. A Core i3-1005G1 is much more powerful than the kind of Intel Pentium Gold processor that usually gets the cut-down OS. It feels cheap, the screen really isn’t up to scratch and you don’t have to spend much more to get a better device.Sound quality is fine, with the usual tendency towards treble-heavy frequencies that is the norm on cheaper, lighter laptops. I have over six years of experience covering Microsoft, Surface, Windows, macOS and ChromeOS news and rumors for sites like Digital Trends and OnMSFT. Here, you could argue that what matters more is Chrome OS’s minuscule start-up times, hassle-free upgrades, baked-in security and overall ease of use. And while it hasn’t got much in the way of processing power or storage – you get a tiny 32GB eMMC flash drive – these things matter less on a low-cost Chromebook, which is designed primarily to run a browser and lightweight, web-based apps. There’s something a bit cheap-looking and toy-like about the IdeaPad 3’s square chiclet keys – we’re a long way away from the classy, sculpted keytops found on Lenovo’s business-grade ThinkPad laptops.

With coronavirus shutdowns putting a hold on many of these activities, Chromebooks still need long battery life for kids who use them as remote-learning devices in the basement or backyard while their parents work in the home office. It’s true that most of us are stuck at home far more now than in previous years, but you still need a laptop to be free from needing a power-point otherwise you might as well get a big old desktop machine. If there’s one good reason to get excited about the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Chromebook, it’s that it’s astonishingly cheap. The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 has a 35Wh battery, a fairly low capacity for a laptop you might want to take out to work somewhere far from a power socket.

But the cursor moves edge to edge on the screen without issue and multi-touch gestures are all executed rapidly and consistently. The IdeaPad 3 also has a cramped 32GB flash storage drive, so you’ll need to keep most of your large files—photos, videos, and the like—in the cloud or on an external drive.
