About this deal

Your goal is to completely fill the board space between the edge and the divider (known as a “penta”) with the allotted pieces. For even more challenges, try to complete as many PENTAS as possible with all the pieces, progressively moving the slider up to increase the difficulty. To begin your first small slam, Place the slider on the board between numbers 3 and 4, and then take the first 3 Pentaminos shown on the table on line A until column 3 and complete the PENTA 3. Using the 8×8 paper grid provided in the back of the spiral-bound book rather than the board, the first player takes a pentamino and places it somewhere inside the grid.

They don’t appear to be carefully cut, however, as I noticed gaps between several of the pieces when they are aligned with each other. The gameboard is constructed with a movable divider so one can take sets of 4 up to the whole set of 12 pieces and form them into a 5 block by X rectangle. When you are ready for more challenges, start again on Line B, Line C and so on, until you have completed Line G. If at any point we think that we will take longer than this, we will inform you as soon as possible.

Katamino is a puzzle game with both 2D and 3D challenges of progressive difficulty, and also offers a strategic game challenge for two players. The board itself is a nice solid wooden construction with numbers 3-12 printed along the top and bottom. For example a Penta 6 is created by laying the slider between the number 6 and the number 7 on the game board (see below).Katamino is a puzzle game with both 2D and 3D challenges of progressive difficulty, and a strategic game challenge for two players. This game, known in pentomino circles as Golomb’s Game, has players choosing a pentomino and placing it on the board such that all of the parts of the pentomino line up with the grids and it remains within the boundaries of the playing area.

Having a puzzle in front of me that requires only a few pieces and no set pace or time gives me a chance to focus on something small. Use only the 12 pentaminos (the small red and maroon pieces are not used) and try to find as many PENTAS 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 as possible.

It is both educational and fun, helping children (and adults) understand the basic concepts of geometry. A PENTA is a group of several pentaminos which perfectly fills the rectangle bound by the positioning of the slider.
