About this deal

As soon as the monitor is on and picks up the heart rate (you might want to apply some water to the back of the strap for better connection), the LED lights on the top of the device start flashing, signalling it's ready to connect. The reviews generally take a lot of hours to put together, so it’s a fair bit of work (and labor of love). The first time I ran with it, I had to stop to tighten it a little bit, but otherwise it has never created any discomfort during training. I’ve owned “all the HRMs” and my experience mirrors yours: *any* Garmin HRM that relied on screws to secure the battery door would fail after one or two battery replacements, or within a couple of years. Next, the strap lights up Running Power, either via the Garmin Connect IQ app, or if you’ve got a Forerunner 255/955, Instinct 2, or Fenix 7/Epix, then it does it natively.

So let’s say you’re inside on Zwift, Peloton, or TrainerRoad (running on an iPad), then that’ll pair via Bluetooth Smart, while you can still also then pair it up to your watch via ANT+. What we know is that the Peloton Heart Rate Band is an armband that's meant to be worn on the forearm and measures heart rate and Strive Score, which was launched in April 2021. Rather than relying on a replaceable battery, it's rechargeable, promising around 20 hours of use per charge. It can be a smart thing to do if your heart rate watch is charging or you don´t have the possibility to wear it to work. For those who don’t want to be tied to their watch, it quickly becomes addictive, and if you’re a multi-eventer it’s worth getting.

The emphasis is on 'young' and 'healthy' as overworking your body, especially after a certain age, can have a detrimental effect on cardiovascular health.

Next, there’s a trail and road run compared to the existing Garmin HRM-PRO strap, as well as the Polar Verity Sense. In those cases, the usage is the same: Start the sport with the strap paired, and then go do the sport. With the addition of offline memory, you can now use Garmin HRM-PRO without having your watch nearby - and without losing the data. The HRM-Swim is built primarily for use in the water, with a strap that’s designed to make sure it doesn’t shift as you swim and a waterproof rating that makes it suitable for up to 50 metres depth. Like most Garmin ‘Plus’-enabled things, this is a modest upgrade from their existing high-end chest strap, the HRM-PRO that came out two summers ago. If you found this review useful, feel free to hit up the links at the end of the site, or consider becoming a DCR Supporter. The HRM-Dual is a heart rate monitor built with comfort in mind, thanks to a soft material chest strap that's easy to adjust.

Before we dive into our full list of the best heart rate monitors though, there are a few things you might want to brush up on first. I tried this out and saw new steps appear in my health stats on Garmin Connect, which is pretty cool. For cycling I have a circa 2009 “classic”/hard Garmin strap that is going strong after many battery changes, tried a couple “comfort” ones but they seemed to give flaky data. But, the major downside to the Wahoo TICKR X (2020), is that myself and many others have had a heck of a time with it and reliability. Most people will of course wear a watch the majority of the day, but for those that may not be able to wear a watch for any number of reasons, this at least still accounts for that data.Once the strap is on it gathers all your general activity stats as well as your training; even if your Garmin watch is on the charge, you still get your steps. Like most treadmills, it transmits what it thinks it’s set at (versus what it’s actually doing), which may or may not be entirely correct. for Zwift but it had Bluetooth dropouts (my Zwifting Mac only has Bluetooth) that also took out the ANT+.
