About this deal

At first they suffer mishaps but gradually they make friends with the boating fraternity and encounter a remarkable young girl, Rosie. Loved by a kindly but weak flourmill worker who marries the miller's daughter for her money, and raped by a weak, drunken aristo(egged on by his appalling sister - a recurring theme in Miss Cookson's work),she becomes pregnant and gives birth to the heir to a baronetcy who becomes the object of an epic struggle. This is in the County of Durham in Northeast England, and there are few options for the absolutely destitute. Ok, it seems there are many contradictions regarding the plot of this story and personally, I feel, this is as a result of many who had watched the mini-series believing the novel is accurate to the tv/movie adaptation, which it is not.

Clive insists she moves into the house he has bought for her and says he will be back in a year to make a life with her and Richard. Bella has been locked in the coal cellar and upon being released to go for trial, she is informed that much harsher punishments await her in the house of correction. Lord Fischel believes that ‘it’s only through poverty and hunger that the population can be kept in balance. Unable to see her sister condemned to such a fate, Cissie strikes a bargain with Lord Fischer, offering to hand over the baby if he will use his influence to secure the dropping of charges against Bella.

I am sorry that the author separated them for 18 years, maybe I liked the series' ending a little bit more.

More intrigue and violent confrontations follow, and as in any great novel, there are plenty of unexpected twists to the rest of the story, including romantic ones. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings, where she met and married Tom Cookson, a local grammar-school master. But then, in a single week, his whole world had been turned upside down by a dancer, Stephanie McQueen, who seemed to float across the stage of the Empire Music Hall where she was appearing as The Maltese Angel.Set in the 1830's, the film tells the story of 16-year-old Cissie Brodie after the death of parents, and the repossession of the family home. Mary Walton is the apple of her father's eye; his only comfort during the dark years of the Depression when he is faced with both unemployment and a nagging, ambitious wife.
