Tatum plays an army ranger suckered into transporting his late friend’s difficult dog to his funeral. Seriously, how many times have we gone into a dog movie hoping we didn’t just get suckered into another one where the dog dies in the end? Because dogs can take on new dimensions of ferocity and cuteness in animation, there’s plenty to see here in this list.There’s a way this could have been handled with some delicacy and interrogation (what sort of racial profiling has infected the instincts of some army-trained dogs? When the pandemic hit, and production was halted for nine months, Tatum and the trainers got ample time to work with each dog to get them ready for the movie. And some of those movies where the dog lives happily after ever, with a nice house and a bowl of kibble and a robust 401k, are also classics. The scrapes the pair get into include a failed tantric threesome with two women in Portland, a kidnap on a weed farm involving a tranquilliser and an axe and a racist attack at a high-end hotel leading to time behind bars.
